  sothatmymentionoftheairofdisparityinthecoupleIhavejustnamedcameinitsorderandproduceditseffect。Thiseffectwasthatofmyseeing——whichwasallIrequired——thatifthedisparitywasmarkedforhimthisexpertobservercouldyetreaditquitethewrongway。Whyhadsofineayoungcreaturemarriedamanthreetimesherage?HewasofcourseastoundedwhenItoldhimtheyoungcreaturewasmuchnearerthreetimesBrissenden’s,andthisledtosomeinterestingtalkbetweenusastotheconsequences,ingeneral,ofsuchassociationonsuchterms。Theparticularcasebeforeus,Ieasilygranted,sinnedbyover—emphasis,butitwasafair,thoughagross,illustrationofwhatalmostalwaysoccurredwhentwentyandforty,whenthirtyandsixty,matedormingled,livedtogetherinintimacy。Intimacyofcoursehadtobepostulated。Theneitherthehighnumberorthelowalwaysgottheupperhand,anditwasusuallythehighthatsucceeded。
