  Andsurely,themiserindividuallywillbeanignoblecompetitorinaStateforanyprizeofvictory,orotherobjectofhonourableambition;hewillnotspendhismoneyinthecontestforglory;soafraidisheofawakeninghisexpensiveappetitesandinvitingthemtohelpandjoininthestruggle;intrueoligarchicalfashionhefightswithasmallpartonlyofhisresources,andtheresultcommonlyisthathelosestheprizeandsaveshismoney。

  Canweanylongerdoubt,then,thatthemiserandmoney—makeranswerstotheoligarchicalState?

  Ontheotherhand,themenofbusiness,stoopingastheywalk,andpretendingnoteventoseethosewhomtheyhavealreadyruined,inserttheirsting——thatis,theirmoney——intosomeoneelsewhoisnotonhisguardagainstthem,andrecovertheparentsummanytimesovermultipliedintoafamilyofchildren:andsotheymakedroneandpaupertoaboundintheState。
  Yes,hesaid,thereareplentyofthem——thatiscertain。

  Afterthisheliveson,spendinghismoneyandlabourandtimeonunnecessarypleasuresquiteasmuchasonnecessaryones;butifhebefortunate,andisnottoomuchdisorderedinhiswits,whenyearshaveelapsed,andtheheydayofpassionisover——supposingthathethenre—admitsintothecitysomepartoftheexiledvirtues,anddoesnotwhollygivehimselfuptotheirsuccessors——inthatcasehebalanceshispleasuresandlivesinasortofequilibrium,puttingthegovernmentofhimselfintothehandsoftheonewhichcomesfirstandwinstheturn;andwhenhehashadenoughofthat,thenintothehandsofanother;hedespisesnoneofthembutencouragesthemallequally。
