  Annastoodlookingfromonetotheother。IthadbecomeapparenttoherinaflashthatOwen’sretort,thoughitstartledSophy,didnottakeherbysurprise;andthediscoveryshotitslightalongdarkdistancesoffear。
  TheimmediateinferencewasthatOwenhadguessedthereasonofDarrow’sdisapprovalofhismarriage,orthat,atleast,hesuspectedSophyVinerofknowinganddreadingit。ThisconfirmationofherownobscuredoubtsentatremorofalarmthroughAnna。Foramomentshefeltlikeexclaiming:"Allthisisreallynobusinessofmine,andIrefusetohaveyoumixmeupinit——"buthersecretfearheldherfast。
  SophyVinerwasthefirsttospeak。
