  Theamendmentwasaccepted,andthemotionput。Itwascarriedwithanenthusiasticaye,andtheorganizationwascomplete。
  Thevariouscommitteesretiredtotheseveralcornersoftheroomtodiscusstheirindividuallinesofaction,whenashadowwasobservedtoobscurethemoonlightwhichhadbeenstreaminginthroughthewindow。ThefacesofCalpurniaandCleopatrablanchedforaninstant,as,immediatelyfollowinguponthisapparition,alargebundlewashurledthroughtheopenportintothemiddleoftheroom,andtheshadowvanished。

  Itwasabouttwenty—fourhoursaftertheeventsnarratedintheprecedingchaptersthatMr。SherlockHolmesassumedcommandoftheGehenna,whichwasnothingmorenorlessthantheshadowoftheill—
  starredoceansteamshipCityofChicago,whichtriedsomeyearsagotoreachLiverpoolbytakingtheoverlandroutethroughIreland,fortunatelywithoutdetrimenttoherpassengersandcrew,whohadthepleasureoftheexperienceofshipwreckwithoutanyofthediscomfortsofdrowning。Aswillberemembered,theobstructionistnatureoftheIrishsoilpreventedtheCityofChicagofromproceedingfartherinlandthanwasnecessarytokeepherwellbalancedamidshipsuponaconvenientandnottoostonybed;andthatafterabriefsojournontherocksshewasfinallydisposedoftotheStyxNavigationCompany,underwhichtitleCharonhadhadhimselfincorporated,isamatterofnauticalhistory。ThechangeofnametotheGehennawastheactofCharonhimself,andwasprompted,nodoubt,byadesiretosoftenthejealousprejudicesoftheresidentsoftheStygiancapitalagainsttheflourishingandever—growingmetropolisofIllinois。
  TheAssociatedShadeshadhadsometroubleingettingthiscraft。
  Charon,throughhisconstantassociationwithlifeonbothsidesofthedarkriver,hadgainedaknowledge,moreorlessintimate,ofmodernbusinessmethods,andwhileasjanitoroftheclubhewassubjecttothewilloftheHouse—boatCommittee,andsympathizeddeeplywiththemembersoftheassociationintheirtrouble,aspresidentoftheStyxNavigationCompanyhewasboundupincertainnewlyattainedcommercialideaswhichwereembarrassingtothosemembersoftheassociationtowhosehandsthecharteringofavesselhadbeencommitted。
  "Seehere,Charon,"SirWalterRaleighhadsaid,afterCharonhadexpressedhimselfasdeeplysympathetic,butunabletoshavethetermsuponwhichthevesselcouldbehad,"youareaninfernaloldhypocrite。Yougoaboutwringingyourhandsoverourmisfortunesuntilthey’vegotasdryandflabbyasapairofkidgloves,andyetwhenweaskyouforashipofsuitablesizeandspeedtogooutafterthosepirates,youbecomeasortoftwinbrothertoShylock,withouthisexcuse。Hisinstinctsareaccidentsofbirth。Yoursarecultivated,andyouknowit。"
