  AtlengthwhenmidnightwithhersilencedeepDidheavenandearthhushed,still,andquietmake,Sorewatchedandweary,hebegantosteepHiscaresandsorrowsinoblivion’slake,Andinalittle,short,unquietsleepSomesmallreposehisfaintingspiritstake;

  “OSolyman!thoufar-renownedking,Tillbetterseasonserve,forbearthyrest;
  Astrangerdoththylandsinthraldombring,Niceisaslave,byChristianyokeoppressed;
  Sleepestthouhere,forgetfulofthisthing,Thatherethyfriendslieslain,notlaidinchest,Whosebonesbearwitnessofthyshameandscorn!
  Andwiltthouidlyhereattendthemorn?“

  Thekingawoke,andsawbeforehiseyesAmanwhosepresenceseemedgraveandold,Awrithenstaffhisstepsunstableguies,Whichservedhisfeeblememberstouphold。
  “Andwhatartthou?“theprinceinscornreplies,“Whatspritetovexpoorpassengerssobold,Tobreaktheirsleep?orwhattotheebelongsMyshame,myloss,myvengeanceormywrongs。“

  Acceptingree,mylord,thewordsIspoke,Asspursthineireandcouragetoprovoke。

  “ButnowtovisitEgypt’smightyking,Unlessmyjudgmentfall,youareprepared,Iprophesy,aboutaneedlessthingYousuffershallavoyagelongandhard:
  Forthoughyoustay,themonarchgreatwillbringHisnewassembledhosttoJuda-ward,Noplaceofservicethere,nocauseoffight,Norgainstourfoestouseyourforceandmight。

  “Butifyoufollowme,withinthiswallWithChristianarmshemmedinoneveryside,Withoutenbattle,fight,orstrokeatall,Evenatnoonday,Iwillyousafelyguide,Whereyoudelight,rejoice,andgloryshallInperilsgreattoseeyourprowesstried。
  Thatnobletownyoumaypreserveandshield,TillEgypt’shostcometorenewthefield。“

  Whilethusheparleyed,ofthisagedguestTheTurkthewordsandlooksdidbothadmire,AndfromhishaughtyeyesandfuriousbreastHelaidaparthispride,hisrageandire,Andhumblysaid,“IwillingamandprestTofollowwherethouleadest,reverendsire,AndthatadvicebestfitsmyangryveinThattellsofgreatestperil,greatestpain。“
