  Hehadalwaysseenthingsinpictures;punishmentmeantstandinginthecornercountingtheshipsonthewallpaper;summerholidaysmeantthedeepgreenmeadowsofCowFarm,orapurplepoolunderanafternoonsun;religionmeantwalkingupthegreatwideaisleoftheCathedralincreakingbootsandcleanunderclothes,andsoon。Itwasnothingnewforhimtomakeapicture,andtoletthatpicturestandforawholecomplexphaseoflife。Butthis?WhathadittodowiththeSea-Captain,audwhywasit,asheknewinhisheartthatitwas,wickedandwrongandfurtive?Forthishadbegunasahighadventurousromance。TherehadbeennothingwronginthatfirsttalkintheMeads,whentheCaptainhadshownhimthetatooes。ThewickednessofithaddevelopedpartlywithhisgrowinglongingtoseetheCaptainagain,partlywiththemeetingthatactuallyfollowed,andpartlywiththesensethatgrewandgrewasthedayspassedthattheCaptainwasalwayswatchinghim。
  TheCaptain,duringtheseweeks,seemedtobeeverywhere。NeverwasthereanafternoonthatJeremywalkedoutwithMissJonesandhissistersthathedidnotappear。Itwasnotverydifficulttosnatchaconversationwithhim。Becausethebeautyofthespringweathercontinued,thechildrenwenteverydayforawalkintheMeads,andonatleastthreeseparateoccasionsJeremyandtheCaptainenjoyedquitelongconversationstogether。Thesewere,noneofthem,sogoodasthatfirstonehadbeen。TheCaptainwasnotsogenial,norsolight-hearted;itseemedthathehadsomethingonhismind。
