TheBakwainsatKolobenghadthespectacleofvarioustribesenslavedbeforetheireyestheBakatla，theBatlokua，theBahukeng，theBamosetla，andtwoothertribesofBakwainswereallgroaningundertheoppressionofunrequitedlaborThiswouldnothavebeenfeltassogreatanevilbutthattheyoungmenofthosetribes，anxioustoobtaincattle，theonlymeansofrisingtorespectabilityandimportanceamongtheirownpeople，wereinthehabitofsallyingforth，likeourIrishandHighlandreapers，toprocureworkintheCapeColony。
　　Afterlaboringtherethreeorfouryears，inbuildingstonedikesanddamsfortheDutchfarmers，theywerewellcontentifattheendofthattimetheycouldreturnwithasmanycowsOnpresentingonetotheirchief，theyrankedasrespectablemeninthetribeeverafterwardThesevolunteerswerehighlyesteemedamongtheDutch，underthenameofMantatees。

　　ButthediscoveryofLakeNgami，hereaftertobedescribed，madethetraderscomeinfive-foldgreaternumbers，andSechelereplied，“IwasmadeanindependentchiefandplacedherebyGod，andnotbyyou。
　　IwasneverconqueredbyMosilikatze，asthosetribeswhomyouruleover；
　　andtheEnglisharemyfriendsIgeteverythingIwishfromthem。
　　Icannothinderthemfromgoingwheretheylike。”ThosewhoareoldenoughtorememberthethreatenedinvasionofourownislandmayunderstandtheeffectwhichtheconstantdangerofaBoerishinvasionhadonthemindsoftheBakwains；butnootherscanconceivehowworryingwerethemessagesandthreatsfromtheendlessself-constitutedauthoritiesoftheMagaliesbergBoers；andwhentoallthisharassingannoyancewasaddedthescarcityproducedbythedrought，wecouldnotwonderat，thoughwefeltsorryfor，theirindispositiontoreceiveinstruction。
