　　Inadditiontootheradverseinfluences，thegeneraluncertainty，thoughnotabsolutewantoffood，andthenecessityoffrequentabsenceforthepurposeofeitherhuntinggameorcollectingrootsandfruits，provedaseriousbarriertotheprogressofthepeopleinknowledge。
　　OurowneducationinEnglandiscarriedonatthecomfortablebreakfastanddinnertable，andbythecosyfire，aswellasinthechurchandschoolFewEnglishpeoplewithstomachspainfullyemptywouldbedecorousatchurchanymorethantheyarewhentheseorgansareoverchargedRaggedschoolswouldhavebeenafailurehadnottheteacherswiselyprovidedfoodforthebodyaswellasfoodforthemind；andnotonlymustweshowafriendlyinterestinthebodilycomfortoftheobjectsofoursympathyasaChristianduty，butwecannomorehopeforhealthyfeelingsamongthepoor，eitherathomeorabroad，withoutfeedingthemintothem，thanwecanhopetoseeanordinaryworking-beerearedintoaqueen-motherbytheordinaryfoodofthehive。
　　SendingtheGospeltotheheathenmust，ifthisviewbecorrect，includemuchmorethanisimpliedintheusualpictureofamissionary，namely，amangoingaboutwithaBibleunderhisarm。
　　Thepromotionofcommerceoughttobespeciallyattendedto，asthis，morespeedilythananythingelse，demolishesthatsenseofisolationwhichheathenismengenders，andmakesthetribesfeelthemselvesmutuallydependenton，andmutuallybeneficialtoeachother。
　　Withaviewtothis，themissionariesatKurumangotpermissionfromthegovernmentforatradertoresideatthestation，andaconsiderabletradehasbeentheresult；thetraderhimselfhasbecomerichenoughtoretirewithacompetenceThoselawswhichstillpreventfreecommercialintercourseamongthecivilizednationsseemtobenothingelsebuttheremainsofourownheathenism。
　　MyobservationsonthissubjectmakemeextremelydesiroustopromotethepreparationoftherawmaterialsofEuropeanmanufacturesinAfrica，forbythatmeanswemaynotonlyputastoptotheslave-trade，butintroducethenegrofamilyintothebodycorporateofnations，noonememberofwhichcansufferwithouttheotherssufferingwithit。

　　Indeed，totheBoersgenerallythelattertermwouldbequiteinappropriate，fortheyareasober，industrious，andmosthospitablebodyofpeasantry。

　　TheybeingthechosenpeopleofGod，theheathenaregiventothemforaninheritance，andtheyaretherodofdivinevengeanceontheheathen，asweretheJewsofoldLivinginthemidstofanativepopulationmuchlargerthanthemselves，andatfountainsremovedmanymilesfromeachother，theyfeelsomewhatinthesameinsecurepositionasdotheAmericansintheSouthernStatesThefirstquestionputbythemtostrangersisrespectingpeace；andwhentheyreceivereportsfromdisaffectedorenviousnativesagainstanytribe，thecaseassumesalltheappearanceandproportionsofaregularinsurrection。

　　Buthowisitthatthenatives，beingsovastlysuperiorinnumberstotheBoers，donotriseandannihilatethem？ThepeopleamongwhomtheyliveareBechuanas，notCaffres，thoughnoonewouldeverlearnthatdistinctionfromaBoer；andhistorydoesnotcontainonesingleinstanceinwhichtheBechuanas，eventhoseofthemwhopossessfire-arms，haveattackedeithertheBoersortheEnglishIfthereissuchaninstance，Iamcertainitisnotgenerallyknown，eitherbeyondorintheCapeColony。
　　Theyhavedefendedthemselveswhenattacked，asinthecaseofSechele，buthaveneverengagedinoffensivewarwithEuropeans。
