  Inadditiontootheradverseinfluences,thegeneraluncertainty,thoughnotabsolutewantoffood,andthenecessityoffrequentabsenceforthepurposeofeitherhuntinggameorcollectingrootsandfruits,provedaseriousbarriertotheprogressofthepeopleinknowledge。
  OurowneducationinEnglandiscarriedonatthecomfortablebreakfastanddinnertable,andbythecosyfire,aswellasinthechurchandschoolFewEnglishpeoplewithstomachspainfullyemptywouldbedecorousatchurchanymorethantheyarewhentheseorgansareoverchargedRaggedschoolswouldhavebeenafailurehadnottheteacherswiselyprovidedfoodforthebodyaswellasfoodforthemind;andnotonlymustweshowafriendlyinterestinthebodilycomfortoftheobjectsofoursympathyasaChristianduty,butwecannomorehopeforhealthyfeelingsamongthepoor,eitherathomeorabroad,withoutfeedingthemintothem,thanwecanhopetoseeanordinaryworking-beerearedintoaqueen-motherbytheordinaryfoodofthehive。
  SendingtheGospeltotheheathenmust,ifthisviewbecorrect,includemuchmorethanisimpliedintheusualpictureofamissionary,namely,amangoingaboutwithaBibleunderhisarm。
  Thepromotionofcommerceoughttobespeciallyattendedto,asthis,morespeedilythananythingelse,demolishesthatsenseofisolationwhichheathenismengenders,andmakesthetribesfeelthemselvesmutuallydependenton,andmutuallybeneficialtoeachother。
  Withaviewtothis,themissionariesatKurumangotpermissionfromthegovernmentforatradertoresideatthestation,andaconsiderabletradehasbeentheresult;thetraderhimselfhasbecomerichenoughtoretirewithacompetenceThoselawswhichstillpreventfreecommercialintercourseamongthecivilizednationsseemtobenothingelsebuttheremainsofourownheathenism。
  MyobservationsonthissubjectmakemeextremelydesiroustopromotethepreparationoftherawmaterialsofEuropeanmanufacturesinAfrica,forbythatmeanswemaynotonlyputastoptotheslave-trade,butintroducethenegrofamilyintothebodycorporateofnations,noonememberofwhichcansufferwithouttheotherssufferingwithit。
  Successinthis,inbothEasternandWesternAfrica,wouldlead,inthecourseoftime,toamuchlargerdiffusionoftheblessingsofcivilizationthaneffortsexclusivelyspiritualandeducationalconfinedtoanyonesmalltribeThese,however,itwouldofcoursebeextremelydesirabletocarryonatthesametimeatlargecentralandhealthystations,forneithercivilizationnorChristianitycanbepromotedaloneInfact,theyareinseparable。

  AnotheradverseinfluencewithwhichthemissionhadtocontendwasthevicinityoftheBoersoftheCashanMountains,otherwisenamed“Magaliesberg“ThesearenottobecounfoundedwiththeCapecolonists,whosometimespassbythename。
  ThewordBoersimplymeans“farmer“,andisnotsynonymouswithourwordboor。
  Indeed,totheBoersgenerallythelattertermwouldbequiteinappropriate,fortheyareasober,industrious,andmosthospitablebodyofpeasantry。
  Those,however,whohavefledfromEnglishlawonvariouspretexts,andhavebeenjoinedbyEnglishdesertersandeveryothervarietyofbadcharacterintheirdistantlocalities,areunfortunatelyofaverydifferentstampThegreatobjectionmanyoftheBoershad,andstillhave,toEnglishlaw,isthatitmakesnodistinctionbetweenblackmenandwhiteTheyfeltaggrievedbytheirsupposedlossesintheemancipationoftheirHottentotslaves,anddeterminedtoerectthemselvesintoarepublic,inwhichtheymightpursue,withoutmolestation,the“propertreatmentoftheblacks“。
  Itisalmostneedlesstoaddthatthe“propertreatment“
  hasalwayscontainedinittheessentialelementofslavery,namely,compulsoryunpaidlabor。
  Onesectionofthisbody,underthelateMrHendrickPotgeiter,penetratedtheinteriorasfarastheCashanMountains,whenceaZuluorCaffrechief,namedMosilikatze,hadbeenexpelledbythewell-knownCaffreDingaan;andagladwelcomewasgiventhembytheBechuanatribes,whohadjustescapedthehardswayofthatcruelchieftainTheycamewiththeprestigeofwhitemenanddeliverers;
  buttheBechuanassoonfound,astheyexpressedit,“thatMosilikatzewascrueltohisenemies,andkindtothoseheconquered;
  butthattheBoersdestroyedtheirenemies,andmadeslavesoftheirfriends。”
  Thetribeswhostillretainthesemblanceofindependenceareforcedtoperformallthelaborofthefields,suchasmanuringtheland,weeding,reaping,building,makingdamsandcanals,andatthesametimetosupportthemselvesIhavemyselfbeenaneye-witnessofBoerscomingtoavillage,and,accordingtotheirusualcustom,demandingtwentyorthirtywomentoweedtheirgardens,andhaveseenthesewomenproceedtothesceneofunrequitedtoil,carryingtheirownfoodontheirheads,theirchildrenontheirbacks,andinstrumentsoflaborontheirshouldersNorhavetheBoersanywishtoconcealthemeannessofthusemployingunpaidlabor;
  onthecontrary,everyoneofthem,fromMrPotgeiterandMrGertKrieger,thecommandants,downward,laudedhisownhumanityandjusticeinmakingsuchanequitableregulation“Wemakethepeopleworkforus,inconsiderationofallowingthemtoliveinourcountry。”
  IcanappealtotheCommandantKriegeriftheforegoingisnotafairandimpartialstatementoftheviewsofhimselfandhispeople。
  IamsensibleofnomentalbiastowardoragainsttheseBoers;
  andduringtheseveraljourneysImadetothepoorenslavedtribes,Ineveravoidedthewhites,buttriedtocureanddidadministerremediestotheirsick,withoutmoneyandwithoutpriceItisduetothemtostatethatIwasinvariablytreatedwithrespect;butitismostunfortunatethattheyshouldhavebeenleftbytheirownChurchforsomanyyearstodeteriorateandbecomeasdegradedastheblacks,whomthestupidprejudiceagainstcolorleadsthemtodetest。
  Thisnewspeciesofslaverywhichtheyhaveadoptedservestosupplythelackoffield-laboronlyThedemandfordomesticservantsmustbemetbyforaysontribeswhichhavegoodsuppliesofcattle。
  ThePortuguesecanquoteinstancesinwhichblacksbecomesodegradedbytheloveofstrongdrinkasactuallytosellthemselves;
  butneverinanyonecase,withinthememoryofman,hasaBechuanachiefsoldanyofhispeople,oraBechuanamanhischild。
  HencethenecessityforaforaytoseizechildrenAndthoseindividualBoerswhowouldnotengageinitforthesakeofslavescanseldomresistthetwo-foldpleaofawell-toldstoryofanintendeduprisingofthedevotedtribe,andtheprospectofhandsomepayinthedivisionofthecapturedcattlebesides。
  ItisdifficultforapersoninacivilizedcountrytoconceivethatanybodyofmenpossessingthecommonattributesofhumanityandtheseBoersarebynomeansdestituteofthebetterfeelingsofournatureshouldwithoneaccordsetout,afterloadingtheirownwivesandchildrenwithcaresses,andproceedtoshootdownincoldbloodmenandwomen,ofadifferentcolor,itistrue,butpossessedofdomesticfeelingsandaffectionsequaltotheirown。
  IsawandconversedwithchildreninthehousesofBoerswhohad,bytheirownandtheirmasters’account,beencaptured,andinseveralinstancesItracedtheparentsoftheseunfortunates,thoughtheplanapprovedbythelong-headedamongtheburghersistotakechildrensoyoungthattheysoonforgettheirparentsandtheirnativelanguagealsoItwaslongbeforeIcouldgivecredittothetalesofbloodshedtoldbynativewitnesses,andhadIreceivednoothertestimonybuttheirsIshouldprobablyhavecontinuedskepticaltothisdayastothetruthoftheaccounts;butwhenIfoundtheBoersthemselves,somebewailinganddenouncing,othersgloryinginthebloodyscenesinwhichtheyhadbeenthemselvestheactors,Iwascompelledtoadmitthevalidityofthetestimony,andtrytoaccountforthecruelanomalyTheyarealltraditionallyreligious,tracingtheirdescentfromsomeofthebestmenHuguenotsandDutch
  theworldeversawHencetheyclaimtothemselvesthetitleof“Christians“,andallthecoloredraceare“blackproperty“or“creatures“。
  TheybeingthechosenpeopleofGod,theheathenaregiventothemforaninheritance,andtheyaretherodofdivinevengeanceontheheathen,asweretheJewsofoldLivinginthemidstofanativepopulationmuchlargerthanthemselves,andatfountainsremovedmanymilesfromeachother,theyfeelsomewhatinthesameinsecurepositionasdotheAmericansintheSouthernStatesThefirstquestionputbythemtostrangersisrespectingpeace;andwhentheyreceivereportsfromdisaffectedorenviousnativesagainstanytribe,thecaseassumesalltheappearanceandproportionsofaregularinsurrection。
  Severemeasuresthenappeartothemostmildlydisposedamongthemasimperativelycalledfor,and,howeverbloodythemassacrethatfollows,noqualmsofconscienceensue:itisadirenecessityforthesakeofpeace。
  Indeed,thelateMrHendrickPotgeitermostdevoutlybelievedhimselftobethegreatpeacemakerofthecountry。
  Buthowisitthatthenatives,beingsovastlysuperiorinnumberstotheBoers,donotriseandannihilatethem?ThepeopleamongwhomtheyliveareBechuanas,notCaffres,thoughnoonewouldeverlearnthatdistinctionfromaBoer;andhistorydoesnotcontainonesingleinstanceinwhichtheBechuanas,eventhoseofthemwhopossessfire-arms,haveattackedeithertheBoersortheEnglishIfthereissuchaninstance,Iamcertainitisnotgenerallyknown,eitherbeyondorintheCapeColony。
  Theyhavedefendedthemselveswhenattacked,asinthecaseofSechele,buthaveneverengagedinoffensivewarwithEuropeans。
  WehaveaverydifferenttaletotelloftheCaffres,andthedifferencehasalwaysbeensoevidenttotheseborderBoersthat,eversincethose“magnificentsavages“*obtainedpossessionoffire-arms,notoneBoerhaseverattemptedtosettleinCaffreland,orevenfacethemasanenemyinthefieldTheBoershavegenerallymanifestedamarkedantipathytoanythingbut“long-shot“warfare,and,sidlingawayintheiremigrationstowardthemoreeffeminateBechuanas,havelefttheirquarrelswiththeCaffrestobesettledbytheEnglish,andtheirwarstobepaidforbyEnglishgold。
