　　Theyareperpetuallytalkingabouttheirlaws；butpracticallytheirsisonlythelawofthestrongestTheBechuanascouldneverunderstandthechangeswhichtookplaceintheircommandants“Why，onecanneverknowwhoisthechiefamongtheseBoersLiketheBushmen，theyhavenoking
　　theymustbetheBushmenoftheEnglish。”Theideathatanytribeofmencouldbesosenselessasnottohaveanhereditarychiefwassoabsurdtothesepeople，that，inordernottoappearequallystupid，IwasobligedtotellthemthatweEnglishweresoanxioustopreservetheroyalblood，thatwehadmadeayoungladyourchief。

　　AtreatywasenteredintowiththeseBoers；anarticleforthefreepassageofEnglishmentothecountrybeyond，andalsoanother，thatnoslaveryshouldbeallowedintheindependentterritory，weredulyinserted，asexpressiveoftheviewsofhermajesty’sgovernmentathome“Butwhataboutthemissionaries？”inquiredtheBoers。
　　“YOUMAYDOASYOUPLEASEWITHTHEM。”issaidtohavebeentheanswerofthe“Commissioner“Thisremark，ifutteredatall，wasprobablymadeinjoke：designingmen，however，circulatedit，andcausedthegeneralbeliefinitsaccuracywhichnowprevailsalloverthecountry，anddoubtlessledtothedestructionofthreemissionstationsimmediatelyafterTheBoers，fourhundredinnumber，weresentbythelateMrPretoriustoattacktheBakwainsin1852。
