Pinecoffinhandledthelatestdevelopmentofthecaseinmasterlystyle,andprovedthatno“popularebullitionofexcitementwastobeapprehended。”NaffertonsaidthattherewasnothinglikeCivilianinsightinmattersofthiskind,andluredhimupabye-

bristles,andtheshoe,brush,andcolorman’stradesrecognizemorevarietiesofbristlesthanyouwouldthinkpossibleAfterPinecoffinhadwonderedalittleatNafferton’srageforinformation,hesentbackamonograph,fifty-onepages,on“ProductsofthePig。”Thisledhim,underNafferton’stenderhandling,straighttotheCawnporefactories,thetradeinhog-skinforsaddles——andthencetothetannersPinecoffinwrotethatpomegranate-seedwasthebestcureforhog-skin,andsuggested——forthepastfourteenmonthshadweariedhim——thatNaffertonshould“raisehispigsbeforehetannedthem。”
