  UponawakeningIfeltstrangelyconfusedinmind,andsometimeelapsedbeforeIcouldbringtorecollectionallthevariouscircumstancesofmysituation。Bydegrees,however,Irememberedall。

  Throughoutthewholeofthenexttedioustwenty-fourhoursnopersoncametomyrelief,andIcouldnothelpaccusingAugustusofthegrossestinattention。Whatalarmedmechieflywas,thatthewaterinmyjugwasreducedtoabouthalfapint,andIwassufferingmuchfromthirst,havingeatenfreelyoftheBolognasausagesafterthelossofmymutton。Ibecameveryuneasy,andcouldnolongertakeanyinterestinmybooks。Iwasoverpowered,too,withadesiretosleep,yettrembledatthethoughtofindulgingit,lesttheremightexistsomeperniciousinfluence,likethatofburningcharcoal,intheconfinedairofthehold。Inthemeantimetherollofthebrigtoldmethatwewerefarinthemainocean,andadullhummingsound,whichreachedmyearsasiffromanimmensedistance,convincedmenoordinarygalewasblowing。IcouldnotimagineareasonfortheabsenceofAugustus。Weweresurelyfarenoughadvancedonourvoyagetoallowofmygoingup。Someaccidentmighthavehappenedtohim-
  butIcouldthinkofnonewhichwouldaccountforhissufferingmetoremainsolongaprisoner,except,indeed,hishavingsuddenlydiedorfallenoverboard,anduponthisideaIcouldnotdwellwithanydegreeofpatience。Itwaspossiblethatwehadbeenbaffledbyheadwinds,andwerestillinthenearvicinityofNantucket。Thisnotion,however,Iwasforcedtoabandon;forsuchbeingthecase,thebrigmusthavefrequentlygoneabout;andIwasentirelysatisfied,fromhercontinualinclinationtothelarboard,thatshehadbeensailingallalongwithasteadybreezeonherstarboardquarter。Besides,grantingthatwewerestillintheneighborhoodoftheisland,whyshouldnotAugustushavevisitedmeandinformedmeofthecircumstance?Ponderinginthismanneruponthedifficultiesofmysolitaryandcheerlesscondition,Iresolvedtowaityetanothertwenty-fourhours,when,ifnoreliefwereobtained,Iwouldmakemywaytothetrap,andendeavoureithertoholdaparleywithmyfriend,orgetatleastalittlefreshairthroughtheopening,andafurthersupplyofwaterfromthestateroom。Whileoccupiedwiththisthought,however,Ifellinspiteofeveryexertiontothecontrary,intoastateofprofoundsleep,orratherstupor。Mydreamswereofthemostterrificdescription。Everyspeciesofcalamityandhorrorbefellme。AmongothermiseriesIwassmotheredtodeathbetweenhugepillows,bydemonsofthemostghastlyandferociousaspect。Immenseserpentsheldmeintheirembrace,andlookedearnestlyinmyfacewiththeirfearfullyshiningeyes。Thendeserts,limitless,andofthemostforlornandawe-inspiringcharacter,spreadthemselvesoutbeforeme。Immenselytalltrunksoftrees,grayandleafless,roseupinendlesssuccessionasfarastheeyecouldreach。Theirrootswereconcealedinwide-spreadingmorasses,whosedrearywaterlayintenselyblack,still,andaltogetherterrible,beneath。Andthestrangetreesseemedendowedwithahumanvitality,andwavingtoandfrotheirskeletonarms,werecryingtothesilentwatersformercy,intheshrillandpiercingaccentsofthemostacuteagonyanddespair。Thescenechanged;andIstood,nakedandalone,amidsttheburningsand-plainsofSahara。Atmyfeetlaycrouchedafiercelionofthetropics。Suddenlyhiswildeyesopenedandfelluponme。Withaconculsiveboundhesprangtohisfeet,andlaidbarehishorribleteeth。Inanotherinstantthereburstfromhisredthroataroarlikethethunderofthefirmament,andIfellimpetuouslytotheearth。
  Stiflinginaparoxysmofterror,Iatlastfoundmyselfpartiallyawake。Mydream,then,wasnotalladream。Now,atleast,Iwasinpossessionofmysenses。Thepawsofsomehugeandrealmonsterwerepressingheavilyuponmybosomhishotbreathwasinmyear-andhiswhiteandghastlyfangsweregleaminguponmethroughthegloom。
  Hadathousandliveshunguponthemovementofalimbortheutteranceofasyllable,Icouldhaveneitherstirrednorspoken。Thebeast,whateveritwas,retainedhispositionwithoutattemptinganyimmediateviolence,whileIlayinanutterlyhelpless,and,I
  fancied,adyingconditionbeneathhim。Ifeltthatmypowersofbodyandmindwerefastleavingme-inaword,thatIwasperishing,andperishingofsheerfright。MybrainswamIgrewdeadlysickmyvisionfailedeventheglaringeyeballsabovemegrewdim。Makingalaststrongeffort,IatlengthbreathedafaintejaculationtoGod,andresignedmyselftodie。Thesoundofmyvoiceseemedtoarouseallthelatentfuryoftheanimal。Heprecipitatedhimselfatfulllengthuponmybody;butwhatwasmyastonishment,when,withalongandlowwhine,hecommencedlickingmyfaceandhandswiththegreatesteagerness,andwiththemostextravagantdemonstrationofaffectionandjoy!Iwasbewildered,utterlylostinamazement-butI
  couldnotforgetthepeculiarwhineofmyNewfoundlanddogTiger,andtheoddmannerofhiscaressesIwellknew。Itwashe。Iexperiencedasuddenrushofbloodtomytemples-agiddyandoverpoweringsenseofdeliveranceandreanimation。IrosehurriedlyfromthemattressuponwhichIhadbeenlying,and,throwingmyselfupontheneckofmyfaithfulfollowerandfriend,relievedthelongoppressionofmybosominafloodofthemostpassionatetears。
  Asuponaformeroccasionmyconceptionswereinastateofthegreatestindistinctnessandconfusionafterleavingthemattress。ForalongtimeIfounditnearlyimpossibletoconnectanyideas;but,byveryslowdegrees,mythinkingfacultiesreturned,andIagaincalledtomemorytheseveralincidentsofmycondition。ForthepresenceofTigerItriedinvaintoaccount;andafterbusyingmyselfwithathousanddifferentconjecturesrespectinghim,wasforcedtocontentmyselfwithrejoicingthathewaswithmetosharemydrearysolitude,andrendermecomfortbyhiscaresses。MostpeoplelovetheirdogsbutforTigerIhadanaffectionfarmoreardentthancommon;andnever,certainly,didanycreaturemoretrulydeserveit。Forsevenyearshehadbeenmyinseparablecompanion,andinamultitudeofinstanceshadgivenevidenceofallthenoblequalitiesforwhichwevaluetheanimal。Ihadrescuedhim,whenapuppy,fromtheclutchesofamalignantlittlevillaininNantucketwhowasleadinghim,witharopearoundhisneck,tothewater;andthegrowndogrepaidtheobligation,aboutthreeyearsafterward,bysavingmefromthebludgeonofastreetrobber。
  Gettingnowholdofthewatch,Ifound,uponapplyingittomyear,thatithadagainrundown;butatthisIwasnotatallsurprised,beingconvinced,fromthepeculiarstateofmyfeelings,thatIhadslept,asbefore,foraverylongperiodoftime,howlong,itwasofcourseimpossibletosay。Iwasburningupwithfever,andmythirstwasalmostintolerable。Ifeltabouttheboxformylittleremainingsupplyofwater,forIhadnolight,thetaperhavingburnttothesocketofthelantern,andthephosphorus-boxnotcomingreadilytohand。Uponfindingthejug,however,IdiscoveredittobeemptyTiger,nodoubt,havingbeentemptedtodrinkit,aswellastodevourtheremnantofmutton,theboneofwhichlay,wellpicked,bytheopeningofthebox。ThespoiledmeatIcouldwellspare,butmyheartsankasIthoughtofthewater。IwasfeebleintheextremesomuchsothatIshookallover,aswithanague,attheslightestmovementorexertion。Toaddtomytroubles,thebrigwaspitchingandrollingwithgreatviolence,andtheoil-caskswhichlayuponmyboxwereinmomentarydangeroffallingdown,soastoblockuptheonlywayofingressoregress。Ifelt,also,terriblesufferingsfromsea-sickness。Theseconsiderationsdeterminedmetomakemyway,atallhazards,tothetrap,andobtainimmediaterelief,beforeIshouldbeincapacitatedfromdoingsoaltogether。
  Havingcometothisresolve,Iagainfeltaboutforthephosphorus-boxandtapers。TheformerIfoundaftersomelittletrouble;but,notdiscoveringthetapersassoonasIhadexpectedforIrememberedverynearlythespotinwhichIhadplacedthem,I
  gaveupthesearchforthepresent,andbiddingTigerliequiet,beganatoncemyjourneytowardthetrap。
  Inthisattemptmygreatfeeblenessbecamemorethaneverapparent。ItwaswiththeutmostdifficultyIcouldcrawlalongatall,andveryfrequentlymylimbssanksuddenlyfrombeneathme;
  when,fallingprostrateonmyface,Iwouldremainforsomeminutesinastateborderingoninsensibility。StillIstruggledforwardbyslowdegrees,dreadingeverymomentthatIshouldswoonamidthenarrowandintricatewindingsofthelumber,inwhicheventIhadnothingbutdeathtoexpectastheresult。Atlength,uponmakingapushforwardwithalltheenergyIcouldcommand,Istruckmyforeheadviolentlyagainstthesharpcornerofaniron-boundcrate。
  Theaccidentonlystunnedmeforafewmoments;butIfound,tomyinexpressiblegrief,thatthequickandviolentrollofthevesselhadthrownthecrateentirelyacrossmypath,soaseffectuallytoblockupthepassage。WithmyutmostexertionsIcouldnotmoveitasingleinchfromitsposition,itbeingcloselywedgedinamongthesurroundingboxesandship-furniture。Itbecamenecessary,therefore,enfeebledasIwas,eithertoleavetheguidanceofthewhipcordandseekoutanewpassage,ortoclimbovertheobstacle,andresumethepathontheotherside。Theformeralternativepresentedtoomanydifficultiesanddangerstobethoughtofwithoutashudder。Inmypresentweakstateofbothmindandbody,IshouldinfalliblylosemywayifIattemptedit,andperishmiserablyamidthedismalanddisgustinglabyrinthsofthehold。Iproceeded,therefore,withouthesitation,tosummonupallmyremainingstrengthandfortitude,andendeavour,asIbestmight,toclamberoverthecrate。
  Uponstandingerect,withthisendinview,Ifoundtheundertakingevenamoreserioustaskthanmyfearshadledmetoimagine。Oneachsideofthenarrowpassagearoseacompletewallofvariousheavylumber,whichtheleastblunderonmypartmightbethemeansofbringingdownuponmyhead;or,ifthisaccidentdidnotoccur,thepathmightbeeffectuallyblockedupagainstmyreturnbythedescendingmass,asitwasinfrontbytheobstaclethere。Thecrateitselfwasalongandunwieldybox,uponwhichnofootholdcouldbeobtained。InvainIattempted,byeverymeansinmypower,toreachthetop,withthehopeofbeingthusenabledtodrawmyselfup。HadIsucceededinreachingit,itiscertainthatmystrengthwouldhaveprovedutterlyinadequatetothetaskofgettingover,anditwasbetterineveryrespectthatIfailed。Atlength,inadesperateefforttoforcethecratefromitsground,Ifeltastrongvibrationinthesidenextme。Ithrustmyhandeagerlytotheedgeoftheplanks,andfoundthataverylargeonewasloose。Withmypocket-knife,which,luckily,Ihadwithme,Isucceeded,aftergreatlabour,inpryingitentirelyoff;andgettingitthroughtheaperture,discovered,tomyexceedingjoy,thattherewerenoboardsontheoppositesideinotherwords,thatthetopwaswanting,itbeingthebottomthroughwhichIhadforcedmyway。InowmetwithnoimportantdifficultyinproceedingalongthelineuntilIfinallyreachedthenail。WithabeatingheartIstooderect,andwithagentletouchpressedagainstthecoverofthetrap。ItdidnotriseassoonasIhadexpected,andIpresseditwithsomewhatmoredetermination,stilldreadinglestsomeotherpersonthanAugustusmightbeinhisstate-room。Thedoor,however,tomyastonishment,remainedsteady,andIbecamesomewhatuneasy,forIknewthatithadformerlyrequiredbutlittleornoefforttoremoveit。Ipusheditstronglyitwasneverthelessfirm:withallmystrengthitstilldidnotgiveway:withrage,withfury,withdespairitsetatdefiancemyutmostefforts;anditwasevident,fromtheunyieldingnatureoftheresistance,thattheholehadeitherbeendiscoveredandeffectuallynailedup,orthatsomeimmenseweighthadbeenplaceduponit,whichitwasuselesstothinkofremoving。
