  butanalogousmisfortuneshadbeenlongasubjectofdiscussionwithastronomers。Ineedscarcetellyou,myfriend,that,evenwhenyouleftus,menhadagreedtounderstandthosepassagesinthemostholywritingswhichspeakofthefinaldestructionofallthingsbyfire,ashavingreferencetotheorboftheearthalone。Butinregardtotheimmediateagencyoftheruin,speculationhadbeenatfaultfromthatepochinastronomicalknowledgeinwhichthecometsweredivestedoftheterrorsofflame。Theverymoderatedensityofthesebodieshadbeenwellestablished。TheyhadbeenobservedtopassamongthesatellitesofJupiter,withoutbringingaboutanysensiblealterationeitherinthemassesorintheorbitsofthesesecondaryplanets。Wehadlongregardedthewanderersasvaporycreationsofinconceivabletenuity,andasaltogetherincapableofdoinginjurytooursubstantialglobe,evenintheeventofcontact。Butcontactwasnotinanydegreedreaded;fortheelementsofallthecometswereaccuratelyknown。Thatamongthemweshouldlookfortheagencyofthethreatenedfierydestructionhadbeenformanyyearsconsideredaninadmissibleidea。Butwondersandwildfancieshadbeen,oflatedays,strangelyrifeamongmankind;and,althoughitwasonlywithafewoftheignorantthatactualapprehensionprevailed,upontheannouncementbyastronomersofanewcomet,yetthisannouncementwasgenerallyreceivedwithIknownotwhatofagitationandmistrust。
  Theelementsofthestrangeorbwereimmediatelycalculated,anditwasatonceconcededbyallobservers,thatitspath,atperihelion,wouldbringitintoverycloseproximitywiththeearth。
  Thereweretwoorthreeastronomers,ofsecondarynote,whoresolutelymaintainedthatacontactwasinevitable。Icannotverywellexpresstoyoutheeffectofthisintelligenceuponthepeople。
  Forafewshortdaystheywouldnotbelieveanassertionwhichtheirintellectsolongemployedamongworldlyconsiderationscouldnotinanymannergrasp。Butthetruthofavitallyimportantfactsoonmakesitswayintotheunderstandingofeventhemoststolid。
