  completefailures,andassuchwillhardlybearnarrating,sinceno
  finalexplanationisforthcoming。Aproblemwithoutasolutionmay
  interestthestudent,butcanhardlyfailtoannoythecasual
  reader。AmongtheseunfinishedtalesisthatofMr。James
  Phillimore,who,steppingbackintohisownhousetogethisumbrella,
  wasnevermoreseeninthisworld。Nolessremarkableisthatofthe
  cutterAlicia,whichsailedonespringmorningintoasmallpatchof
  mistfromwheresheneveragainemerged,norwasanythingfurtherever
  heardofherselfandhercrew。Athirdcaseworthyofnoteisthat
  ofIsadoraPersano,thewell-knownjournalistandduellist,whowas
  foundstarkstaringmadwithamatchboxinfrontofhimwhich
  containedaremarkablewormsaidtobeunknowntoscience。Apart
  fromtheseunfathomedcases,therearesomewhichinvolvethe
  secretsofprivatefamiliestoanextentwhichwouldmean
  consternationinmanyexaltedquartersifitwerethoughtpossible
  thattheymightfindtheirwayintoprint。Ineednotsaythatsuch
  abreachofconfidenceisunthinkable,andthattheserecordswill
  beseparatedanddestroyednowthatmyfriendhastimetoturnhis
  energiestothematter。Thereremainaconsiderableresidueofcases
  ofgreaterorlessinterestwhichImighthaveeditedbeforehadInot
  fearedtogivethepublicasurfeitwhichmightreactuponthe
  reputationofthemanwhomaboveallothersIrevere。InsomeIwas
  myselfconcernedandcanspeakasaneye-witness,whileinothersI
  waseithernotpresentorplayedsosmallapartthattheycould
  onlybetoldasbyathirdperson。Thefollowingnarrativeisdrawn
  frommyownexperience。
  ItwasawildmorninginOctober,andIobservedasIwasdressing
  howthelastremainingleaveswerebeingwhirledfromthesolitary
  planetreewhichgracestheyardbehindourhouse。Idescendedto
  breakfastpreparedtofindmycompanionindepressedspirits,for,
  likeallgreatartists,hewaseasilyimpressedbyhissurroundings。
  Onthecontrary,Ifoundthathehadnearlyfinishedhismeal,and
  thathismoodwasparticularlybrightandjoyous,withthatsomewhat
  sinistercheerfulnesswhichwascharacteristicofhislightermoments。
