  Atthepost—officeIfoundaletterfromValenglard,tellingmethatMadameMorinwouldwaitonmeatChamberiifIwouldsendheracarriage,andanotherfromDesarmoisesdatedfromLyons。HetoldmethatashewasonhiswayfromChamberihehadencounteredhisdaughterincompanywitharascalwhohadcarriedheroff。Hehadburiedhisswordinhisbody,andwouldhavekilledthemifhehadbeenabletostoptheircarriage。HesuspectedthattheyhadbeenstayinginChamberi,andhebeggedmetotryandpersuadehisdaughtertoreturntoLyons;andheaddedthatifshewouldnotdosoIoughttoobligehimbysendingherbackbyforce。Heassuredmethattheywerenotmarried,andhebeggedmetoanswerhisletterbyexpress,forwhichpurposehesentmehisaddress。
  Iguessedatoncethatthisdaughterofhiswasmyfairneighbour,butIdidnotfeelatallinclinedtocometotheaidofthefatherinthewayhewished。
  AssoonasIgotbacktotheinnIsentoffLeDucinatravellingcarriagetoMadameMorin,whomIinformedbyletterthatasIwasonlyatChamberiforhersakeIwouldawaitherconvenience。Thisdone,IabandonedmyselftothedelightIfeltattheromanticadventurewhichfortunehadputinmyway。
