  WhenRibbyhadlaidthetableshetookajugandablueandwhitedish,andwentoutdownthefieldtothefarm,tofetchmilkandbutter。
  Whenshecameback,shepeepedintothebottomoven;thepielookedverycomfortable。
  Ribbyputonhershawlandbonnetandwentoutagainwithabasket,tothevillageshoptobuyapacketoftea,apoundoflumpsugar,andapotofmarmalade。
  Andjustatthesametime,DuchesscameoutofHERhouse,attheotherendofthevillage。
  RibbymetDuchesshalf-wayownthestreet,alsocarryingabasket,coveredwithacloth。Theyonlybowedtooneanother;theydidnotspeak,becausetheyweregoingtohaveaparty。

  Duchessstarted!SheopenedthedooroftheTOPoven;——outcamearichsteamyflavourofvealandham,andtherestoodafinebrownpie,——andthroughaholeinthetopofthepie-crusttherewasaglimpseofalittletinpatty-pan!
