  Andworstofall,betweenmedicinesandnecessariesforthesick,thethreemonths'pensionwasquiteusedup,andwhentheoldsoldier'snursinghadpulledthroughthefiercenessofthefever,therewasnothingbutblackbreadleftinthehouse——andblackbreadwasalmostthesameasnobreadatalltothedaintyappetitiesthefeverhadleft;andthatwaswhathehadtothinkof,andthinkof,ashesatinthecottagedoor。
  "Bah!"saidtheoldsoldier,withsomethingmorelikeagroanthanwaseverheardfromhimwhilehiswoundswerebeingdressed,"IcouldfaceallthearmiesofNapoleonbetterthanthis!"
  Andhesatmoreandmoreinthecottagedoor,asifthatcouldleavethetroublebehind;butitstoodstaringbeforehim,allthesame,tillitalmostshuttherosebushandthebeesoutofsight。Butonemorningatremendoussurprisecametohimlikeaflashoutofthesky!Heheardthesoundofgallopingtroops,andheprickeduphisears,forthatalwaysmadehimthinkofacavalrycharge。
  "Whogoesthere?"hecried;butwithoutansweringhischallengethesoundcamenearerandnearer,andalackeyinfullliverydasheduptothedoor,andpresentedhimwithanotesealedwiththeblood-redsealofthecastlearms。Itwasaninvitationtodineatthecastlewithacompanyofnoblemenandofficersofthearmy。Hislordship,whohadalsofoughtatWaterloo,hadjustlearnedthatacomradewaslivingonhisestate,andmadehastetodohimhonor,andsecureafamousguestforhisdinnerparty。

  Suchsplendorhehadneverseenbefore——athousandthpartwouldhaveboughthealthandhappinessforthedearoneshehadleftwithonlyhisbravegoodbyeandafreshrose-budtocomfortthem!
  However,whatwiththebeautifulladiesofthecastlegatheringroundhimtoaskquestionsaboutthebattle,andwithaseatnearhislordship'srighthandatdinner,hesoonpluckedupagain,andbegantorealizehowdelightfuleverythingwas。Butthatwastheverythingthatalmostspoiledthewholeagain,forwhenhesawhisplatecoveredwithluxuriesanddelicaciesmorethanhecouldpossiblyeat,thethoughtoftheblackbreadhehadleftatthecottagebroughtthetearsrushingtohiseyes。
  But,"Tut!"hesaidtohimselfingreatdismay,"whatanungratefulpoltroonhislordshipwillthinkhehasbroughthere!"
