  JustabouttwominuteslaterMissLinnetwasstandingbyherdesk,arulerinonehandandDaisy'sopenpalmintheother,whileDaisyherself,miserablelittleculprit,stoodwhiteandtremblingbeforeher。Assheraisedtherulertogivethefirstblow,Tommysprangforward,placinghimselfatDaisy'sside,puthisopenpalmoverhers,andwithtearsinhiseyes,pleadedinthiswise:
