  ABOUTmid—dayMr。andMrs。Petulengrocametothedingletopaythepromisedvisit。Belle,atthetimeoftheirarrival,wasinhertent,butIwasatthefire—place,engagedinhammeringpartoftheouter—tire,ordefence,whichhadcomeofffromoneofthewheelsofmyvehicle。OnperceivingthemIforthwithwenttoreceivethem。Mr。PetulengrowasdressedinRomanfashion,withasomewhatsmartly—cutsporting—coat,thebuttonsofwhichwerehalf—crowns—andawaistcoat,scarletandblack,thebuttonsofwhichwerespadedhalf—
  guineas;hisbreecheswereofastuffhalfvelveteen,halfcorduroy,thecordsexceedinglybroad。Hehadleggingsofbuffcloth,furredatthebottom;anduponhisfeetwerehighlows。Underhisleftarmwasalongblackwhaleboneriding—whip,witharedlash,andanimmensesilverknob。
  Uponhisheadwasahatwithahighpeak,somewhatofthekindwhichtheSpaniardscallCALANE,somuchinfavourwiththebravosofSevilleandMadrid。Now,whenIhaveaddedthatMr。Petulengrohadonaveryfinewhitehollandshirt,I
  thinkIhavedescribedhisarray。Mrs。Petulengro—Ibegpardonfornothavingspokenofherfirst—wasalsoarrayedverymuchintheRomanfashion。Herhair,whichwasexceedinglyblackandlustrous,fellinbraidsoneithersideofherhead。Inherearswererings,withlongdropsofgold。Roundherneckwasastringofwhatseemedverymuchlikeverylargepearls,somewhattarnished,however,andapparentlyofconsiderableantiquity。"Hereweare,brother,"saidMr。Petulengro;"hereweare,cometoseeyou—wizardandwitch,witchandwizard:—
  "’There’sachovahanee,andachovahano,ThenavselenisPetulengro。’"
  "Holdyourtongue,sir,"saidMrs。Petulengro;"youmakemeashamedofyouwithyourvulgarditties。Wearecomeavisitingnow,andeverythinglowshouldbeleftbehind。"
  "True,"saidMr。Petulengro;"whybringwhat’slowtothedingle,whichislowenoughalready?"
  "What,areyouacatcheratwords?"saidI。"Ithoughtthatcatchingatwordshadbeenconfinedtothepothousefarmersandvillagewittybodies。"
  "Allfools,"saidMrs。Petulengro,"catchatwords,andverynaturally,asbysodoingtheyhopetopreventthepossibilityofrationalconversation。Catchingatwordsconfinedtopothousefarmers,andvillagewittybodies!No,nottoJasperPetulengro。Listenforanhourortwotothediscourseofasettheycallnewspapereditors,andifyoudon’tgooutandeatgrass,asadogdoeswhenheissick,I

  ThereuponIwenttoBelle’shabitation,andinformedherthatMr。andMrs。Petulengrohadpaidusavisitofceremony,andwereawaitingheratthefire—place。"PraygoandtellthemthatIambusy,"saidBelle,whowasengagedwithherneedle。
  "Idonotfeeldisposedtotakepartinanysuchnonsense。"
  "Ishalldonosuchthing,"saidI;"andIinsistuponyourcomingforthwith,andshowingpropercourtesytoyourvisitors。Ifyoudonot,theirfeelingswillbehurt,andyouareawarethatIcannotbearthatpeople’sfeelingsshouldbeoutraged。Comethismoment,or—""Orwhat?"

  Petulengrotookoffhishat,andmadeaprofoundobeisancetoBelle,whilstMrs。Petulengrorosefromthestool,andmadeaprofoundcurtsey。Belle,whohadflungherhairbackoverhershoulders,returnedtheirsalutationsbybendingherhead,andafterslightlyglancingatMr。Petulengro,fixedherlargeblueeyesfulluponhiswife。Boththesefemaleswereveryhandsome—buthowunlike!Bellefair,withblueeyesandflaxenhair;Mrs。Petulengrowitholivecomplexion,eyesblack,andhairdark—asdarkascouldbe。Belle,indemeanourcalmandproud;thegypsygraceful,butfullofmovementandagitation。Andthenhowdifferentwerethosetwoinstature!TheheadoftheRomanyrawniescarcelyascendedtothebreastofIsopelBerners。IcouldseethatMrs。PetulengrogazedonBellewithunmixedadmiration;sodidherhusband。"Well,"saidthelatter,"onethingIwillsay,whichis,thatthereisonlyoneonearthworthytostandupinfrontofthisshe,andthatisthebeautyoftheworld,asfarasmanfleshisconcerned,TawnoChikno;whatapityhedidnotcomedown!"
  "TawnoChikno,"saidMrs。Petulengro,flaringup;"aprettyfellowhetostandupinfrontofthisgentlewoman,apityhedidn’tcome,quotha?notatall,thefellowisasneak,afraidofhiswife。Hestandupagainstthisrawnie!why,thelookshehasgivenmewouldknockthefellowdown。"

  "Haveyouandyourwifeanythingparticulartosay?ifyouhavenothingbutthiskindofconversationImustleaveyou,asIamgoingtomakeajourneythisafternoon,andshouldbegettingready。"
  "Youmustexcusemyhusband,madam,"saidMrs。Petulengro,"heisnotoverburdenedwithunderstanding,andhassaidbutonewordofsensesincehehasbeenhere,whichwasthatwecametopayourrespectstoyou。WehavedressedourselvesinourbestRomanway,inordertodohonourtoyou;perhapsyoudonotlikeit;ifso,Iamsorry。IhavenoFrenchclothes,madam;ifIhadany,madam,Iwouldhavecomeinthem,inordertodoyoumorehonour。"

  "Iamgladyouarepleasedtothinkitso,madam;ithasbeenadmiredinthegreatcity;itcreatedwhattheycallasensation;andsomeofthegreatladies,thecourtladies,imitatedit,elseIshouldnotappearinitsooftenasIamaccustomed;forIamnotveryfondofwhatisRoman,havinganimaginationthatwhatisRomanisungenteel;infact,I

  "Holdyourtongue,sir,"saidMrs。Petulengro。"Don’tinterruptmeinmydiscourse;ifIcaughtatawordnow,Iamnotinthehabitofdoingso。Iamnoconceitedbody;nonewspaperNeddy;nopothousewittyperson。Iwasabouttosay,madam,thatiftheyoungryeasksyouatanytimeforyourword,youwilldoasyoudeemconvenient;butIamsureyouwillobligehimbyallowingmetobraidyourhair。"

  "Well,then,toobligeme,"saidMrs。Petulengro;"doallowmetobecomeyourpoortire—woman。"
  "Itisgreatnonsense,"saidBelle,reddening;"however,asyoucametoseeme,andaskthematterasaparticularfavourtoyourself—"
  "Thankyou,madam,"saidMrs。Petulengro,leadingBelletothestool;"pleasetositdownhere。Thankyou;yourhairisverybeautiful,madam,"shecontinued,assheproceededtobraidBelle’shair;"soisyourcountenance。Shouldyouevergotothegreatcity,amongthegrandfolks,youwouldmakeasensation,madam。Ihavemadeonemyself,whoamdark;thechisheiskauley,whichlastwordsignifiesblack,whichI
  amnot,thoughratherdark。Thereisnocolourlikewhite,madam;it’ssolasting,sogenteel。Gentilitywillcarrytheday,madam,evenwiththeyoungrye。Hewillaskwordsoftheblacklass,butbegthewordofthefair。"
  InthemeantimeMr。Petulengroandmyselfenteredintoconversation。"Anynewsstirring,Mr。Petulengro?"saidI。
  "Haveyouheardanythingofthegreatreligiousmovements?"
  "Plenty,"saidMr。Petulengro;"allthereligiouspeople,moreespeciallytheEvangelicals—thosethatgoaboutdistributingtracts—areveryangryaboutthefightbetweenGentlemanCooperandWhite—headedBob,whichtheysayoughtnottohavebeenpermittedtotakeplace;andthentheyaretryingalltheycantopreventthefightbetweenthelionandthedogs,whichtheysayisadisgracetoaChristiancountry。NowIcan’tsaythatIhaveanyquarrelwiththereligiouspartyandtheEvangelicals;theyarealwaysciviltomeandmine,andfrequentlygiveustracts,astheycallthem,whichneitherInorminecanread;butIcannotsaythatIapproveofanymovements,religiousornot,whichhaveinaimtoputdownalllifeandmanlysportinthisherecountry。"

  "Peoplearebecomingvastlysharp,"saidMr。Petulengro;"andIamtoldthatalltheold—fashionedgood—temperedconstablesaregoingtobesetaside,andapaidbodyofmentobeestablished,whoarenottopermitatramperorvagabondontheroadsofEngland;—andtalkingofroads,putsmeinmindofastrangestoryIheardtwonightsago,whilstdrinkingsomebeeratapublic—houseincompanywithmycousinSylvester。IhadaskedTawnotogo,buthiswifewouldnotlethim。Justoppositeme,smokingtheirpipes,wereacoupleofmen,somethinglikeengineers,andtheyweretalkingofawonderfulinventionwhichwastomakeawonderfulalterationinEngland;inasmuchasitwouldsetasidealltheoldroads,whichinalittletimewouldbeploughedup,andsowedwithcorn,andcauseallEnglandtobelaiddownwithironroads,onwhichpeoplewouldgothunderingalonginvehicles,pushedforwardbyfireandsmoke。Now,brother,whenIheardthis,Ididnotfeelverycomfortable;forIthoughttomyself,whataqueerplacesucharoadwouldbetopitchone’stentupon,andhowimpossibleitwouldbeforone’scattletofindabiteofgrassuponit;
  andIthoughtlikewiseofthedangertowhichone’sfamilywouldbeexposedinbeingrunoverandseverelyscorchedbythesesameflyingfieryvehicles;soImadeboldtosay,thatIhopedsuchaninventionwouldneverbecountenanced,becauseitwaslikelytodoagreatdealofharm。Whereupon,oneofthemen,givingmeaglance,said,withouttakingthepipeoutofhismouth,thatforhispart,hesincerelyhopedthatitwouldtakeeffect;andifitdidnoothergoodthanstoppingtheramblesofgypsies,andotherlikescamps,itoughttobeencouraged。Well,brother,feelingmyselfinsulted,Iputmyhandintomypocket,inordertopulloutmoney,intendingtochallengehimtofightforafive—
  shillingstake,butmerelyfoundsixpence,havingleftallmyothermoneyatthetent;whichsixpencewasjustsufficienttopayforthebeerwhichSylvesterandmyselfweredrinking,ofwhomIcouldn’thopetoborrowanything—’poorasSylvester’beingaby—wordamongstus。So,notbeingabletobackmyself,Iheldmypeace,andlettheGorgiohaveitallhisownway,who,afterturninguphisnoseatme,wentondiscoursingaboutthesaidinvention,sayingwhatafundofprofititwouldbetothosewhoknewhowtomakeuseofit,andshouldhavethelayingdownofthenewroads,andtheshoeingofEnglandwithiron。Andafterhehadsaidthis,andmuchmoreofthesamekind,whichIcannotremember,heandhiscompaniongotupandwalkedaway;andpresentlyIandSylvestergotupandwalkedtoourcamp;andthereIlaydowninmytentbythesideofmywife,whereIhadanuglydreamofhavingcampeduponanironroad;mytentbeingoverturnedbyaflyingvehicle;mywife’sleginjured;andallmyaffairsputintogreatconfusion。"
  "Now,madam,"saidMrs。Petulengro,"Ihavebraidedyourhairinourfashion:youlookverybeautiful,madam;morebeautiful,ifpossible,thanbefore。"Bellenowrose,andcameforwardwithhertire—woman。Mr。Petulengrowasloudinhisapplause,butIsaidnothing,forIdidnotthinkBellewasimprovedinappearancebyhavingsubmittedtotheministryofMrs。Petulengro’shand。NatureneverintendedBelletoappearasagypsy;shehadmadehertooproudandserious。Amoreproperpartforherwasthatofaheroine,aqueenlyheroine,—thatofTheresaofHungary,forexample;
  or,betterstill,thatofBrynhildatheValkyrie,thebelovedofSigurd,theserpent—killer,whoincurredthecurseofOdin,because,inthetumultofspears,shesidedwiththeyoungking,anddoomedtheoldwarriortodie,towhomOdinhadpromisedvictory。
  Bellelookedatmeforamomentinsilence;thenturningtoMrs。Petulengro,shesaid,"Youhavehadyourwillwithme;

  "No,"saidBelle;"hither—toIhaveallowedyoutodowhatyouplease,buthenceforthIshallhavemyownway。Come,come,"saidshe,observingthatthegypsywasabouttospeak,"wehavehadenoughofnonsense;wheneverIleavethishollow,itwillbewearingmyhairinmyownfashion。"
  "Come,wife,"saidMr。Petulengro;"wewillnolongerintrudeupontheryeandrawnie;thereissuchathingasbeingtroublesome。"ThereuponMr。Petulengroandhiswifetooktheirleave,withmanysalutations。"Thenyouaregoing?"
  saidI,whenBelleandIwereleftalone。"Yes,"saidBelle;

  demanded。"Therearetwoorthreebundlesbymytent,whichyoucanputintothecart,"saidBelle。Iputthebundlesintothecart,andthenledTravellerandthecartupthewindingpathtothemouthofthedingle,nearwhichwasMr。
  Petulengro’sencampment。Bellefollowed。Atthetop,I
  deliveredthereinsintoherhands;welookedateachotherstedfastlyforsometime。Bellethendeparted,andI
  returnedtothedingle,where,seatingmyselfonmystone,I
  remainedforupwardsofanhourinthought。
  CHAPTERVII
  TheFestival—TheGypsySong—PiramusofRome—TheScotchman—GypsyNames。
  ONthefollowingdaytherewasmuchfeastingamongsttheRomanychalsofMr。Petulengro’sparty。ThroughouttheforenoontheRomanychiesdidscarcelyanythingbutcookflesh,andthefleshwhichtheycookedwasswine’sflesh。
  Abouttwoo’clock,thechalsdividingthemselvesintovariousparties,satdownandpartookofthefare,whichwaspartlyroasted,partlysodden。IdinedthatdaywithMr。Petulengroandhiswifeandfamily,Ursula,Mr。andMrs。Chikno,andSylvesterandhistwochildren。Sylvester,itwillbeaswelltosay,wasawidower,andhadconsequentlynoonetocookhisvictualsforhim,supposinghehadany,whichwasnotalwaysthecase,Sylvester’saffairsbeingseldominaprosperousstate。Hewasnotedforhisbadsuccessintrafficking,notwithstandingthemanyhintswhichhereceivedfromJasper,underwhoseprotectionhehadplacedhimself,evenasTawnoChiknohaddone,whohimself,asthereaderhasheardonaformeroccasion,wasanythingbutawealthysubject,thoughhewasatalltimesbetteroffthanSylvester,theLazarusoftheRomanytribe。
  Allourpartyatewithagoodappetite,exceptmyself,who,feelingrathermelancholythatday,hadlittledesiretoeat。
  Ididnot,liketheothers,partakeofthepork,butgotmydinnerentirelyoffthebodyofasquirrelwhichhadbeenshotthedaybeforebyachalofthenameofPiramus,who,besidesbeingagoodshot,wascelebratedforhisskillinplayingonthefiddle。Duringthedinnerahornfilledwithalepassedfrequentlyaround;Idrankofitmorethanonce,andfeltinspiritedbythedraughts。Therepastconcluded,Sylvesterandhischildrendepartedtotheirtent,andMr。
  Petulengro,Tawno,andmyself,gettingup,wentandlaydownunderashadyhedge,whereMr。Petulengro,lightinghispipe,begantosmoke,andwhereTawnopresentlyfellasleep。Iwasabouttofallasleepalso,whenIheardthesoundofmusicandsong。Piramuswasplayingonthefiddle,whilstMrs。
  Chikno,whohadavoiceofherown,wassingingintonessharpenough,butofgreatpower,agypsysong:—
