  Theyleftmesoonafterthis。Itriedtomakethemtellwhothemysteriousfriendmightbe,buttheyrefused。ThekindthingstheysaidandthegratitudetheybothexpressedIshallneverforget。
  Theydidnotstrenuouslyurgemetoreturntothebank,andthatseemedstrangetome。
  "Thejob’syoursifyouwantit,Ros,"saidCaptainJed。"We’dbeonlytoohappytohaveyouifyou’dcome——anytime,soonerorlater。ButIdon’tthinkyouwill。"

  Theyshookhandsandwentaway,promisingtocallatthehousethateveningandbringNellie。

  Thegolden—rod,alwayslatebloomingontheCape,borderedthepathwithgorgeousyellow。Theleavesofthescruboakswerebeginningtoturn,thoughnottofall。IwalkedonandenteredthegrovewheresheandIhadmetafterouradventurewithCarverandthestrandedskiff。Iturnedthebendandsawhercomingtowardme。
