  Theceiling,recentlywhitewashed;mademyeyesachewhentheylookedatit。Oneithersideofthewindow,flaccidgreencurtainshunghelplesslywithnothingtoloopthemup。Thewriting—deskandthepaper—case,viewedasspecimensofwoodwork,recalledtheready—madebedroomsonshowincheapshops。Thebooks,mostlyinslate—coloredbindings,weredevotedtotheliteraturewhichiscalledreligious;Ionlydiscoveredthreeworldlypublicationsamongthem——DomesticCookery,EtiquetteforLadies,andHintsontheBreedingofPoultry。Anuglylittleclock,tickingnoisilyinablackcase,andtwocandlesticksofbasemetalplacedoneithersideofit,completedtheornamentsonthechimney—piece。Neitherpicturesnorprintshidthebarrennessofthewalls。Isawnoneedleworkandnoflowers。Theoneobjectintheplacewhichshowedanypretensionstobeautywasalooking—glassinanelegantgiltframe——sacredtovanity,andworthyoftheofficethatitfilled。SuchwasHelenaGracedieu’ssitting—room。Ireallycouldnothelpthinking:Howlikeher!
