Thetopdrawercontainedacompletecollectionofcarpenter’stoolsinminiature,relicsprobablyofthefar—distanttimewhentheMajorwasaboy,andwhenparentsorfriendshadmadehimapresentofasetoftoytools。Theseconddrawerwasfilledwithtoysofanothersort——presentsmadetoMajorFitz—Davidbyhisfairfriends。Embroideredbraces,smartsmoking—caps,quaintpincushions,gorgeousslippers,glitteringpurses,allborewitnesstothepopularityofthefriendofthewomen。Thecontentsofthethirddrawerwereofalessinterestingsort:theentirespacewasfilledwitholdaccount—books,rangingoveraperiodofmanyyears。Afterlookingintoeachbook,andopeningandshakingituselessly,insearchofanyloosepaperswhichmightbehiddenbetweentheleaves,Icametothefourthdrawer,andfoundmorerelicsofpastpecuniarytransactionsintheshapeofreceiptedbills,neatlytiedtogether,andeachinscribedattheback。AmongthebillsIfoundnearlyadozenloosepapers,allequallyunimportant。Thefifthdrawerwasinsadconfusion。I
