  ITOOKachairatarespectfuldistancefromthesofaonwhichMrs。Macallanseatedherself。Theoldladysmiled,andbeckonedtometotakemyplacebyherside。Judgingbyappearances,shehadcertainlynotcometoseemeinthecharacterofanenemy。ItremainedtobediscoveredIwhethershewerereallydisposedtobemyfriend。
  "Ihavereceivedaletterfromyourunclethevicar,"shebegan。
