  Sosia,asifafraidheshouldbeagainoutwitted,hadrefrainedfromvisitingheruntillateinthemorningofthefollowingday,andthenhebutthrustintheperiodicalbasketoffoodandwine,andhastilyreclosedthedoor。Thatdayrolledon,andNydiafeltherselfpent——barred——inexorablyconfined,whenthatdaywasthejudgment—dayofGlaucus,andwhenherreleasewouldhavesavedhim!Yetknowing,almostimpossibleasseemedherescape,thatthesolechanceforthelifeofGlaucusrestedonher,thisyounggirl,frail,passionate,andacutelysusceptibleasshewas——resolvednottogivewaytoadespairthatwoulddisableherfromseizingwhateveropportunitymightoccur。Shekepthersenseswhenever,beneaththewhirlofintolerablethought,theyreeledandtottered;nay,shetookfoodandwinethatshemightsustainherstrength——thatshemightbeprepared!
