HepassedtheturninggoingdowntoFramleywithcourage,butwhenhecametothefurtherturning,bywhichthecartwouldreturnfromFramleytotheHogglestockroad,helookedwistfullydowntheroadforfarmerMangle。ButfarmerManglewasstillattheMill,waitinginexpectationthatMrCrawleymightcometohim。Butthepoortravellerpausedherebarelyforaminute,andthenwenton,stumblingthroughthemud,strikinghisill—coveredfeetagainsttheroughstonesinthedark,sweatinginhisweakness,almosttotteringattimes,andcalculatingwhetherhisremainingstrengthwouldservetocarryhimhome。Hehadalmostforgottenthebishopandhiswifebeforeatlasthegraspedthewicketgateleadingtohisowndoor。

Theselastwordswerespokenveryslowly,inawhisper——withoutanyexcitement——indeedwithacomposurewhichwashorribletowitness。Andwhathesaidwasthemoreterriblebecauseshewassowellconvincedofthetruthofhiswords。Ofcoursehewasnothief。Shewantednoonetotellherthat。Ashehimselfhadexpressedit,hewasnothiefbeforeGod,howeverthemoneymighthavecomeintohispossession。Thatthereweretimeswhenhisreason,oncesofineandclear,couldnotact,couldnotbetrustedtoguidehimright,asshehadgraduallycometoknowwithfearandtrembling。Buthehimselfhadneverbeforehintedhisownconsciousnessofthiscalamity。Indeedhehadbeensounwillingtospeakofhimselfandhisownstate,thatshehadbeenunableeventoaskhimaquestionaboutthemoney——lestheshouldsuspectthatshesuspectedhim。
