　　TheeagernesswithwhichthefirstvolumeofEmilyDickinson’spoemshasbeenreadshowsveryclearlythatallourallegedmodernartificialitydoesnotpreventapromptappreciationofthequalitiesofdirectnessandsimplicityinapproachingthegreatestthemes，——lifeandloveanddeath。That"irresistibleneedle-touch，"

　　EmilyDickinsonappearstohavewrittenherfirstpoemsinthewinterof1862。InalettertooneofthepresentEditorstheAprilfollowing，shesays，"Imadenoverse，butoneortwo，untilthiswinter。"
　　Thehandwritingwasatfirstsomewhatlikethedelicate，runningItalianhandofoureldergentlewomen；butassheadvancedinbreadthofthought，itgrewbolderandmoreabrupt，untilinherlatestyearseachletterstooddistinctandseparatefromitsfellows。Inmostofherpoems，particularlythelaterones，everythingbywayofpunctuationwasdiscarded，exceptnumerousdashes；andallimportantwordsbeganwithcapitals。Theeffectofapageofhermorerecentmanuscriptisexceedinglyquaintandstrong。Thefac-similegiveninthepresentvolumeisfromoneoftheearliertransitionperiods。Althoughthereisnowhereadate，thehandwritingmakesitpossibletoarrangethepoemswithgeneralchronologicaccuracy。
