  THEversesofEmilyDickinsonbelongemphaticallytowhatEmersonlongsincecalled"thePoetryofthePortfolio,"——somethingproducedabsolutelywithoutthethoughtofpublication,andsolelybywayofexpressionofthewriter’sownmind。Suchversemustinevitablyforfeitwhateveradvantageliesinthedisciplineofpubliccriticismandtheenforcedconformitytoacceptedways。Ontheotherhand,itmayoftengainsomethingthroughthehabitoffreedomandtheunconventionalutteranceofdaringthoughts。Inthecaseofthepresentauthor,therewasabsolutelynochoiceinthematter;shemustwritethus,ornotatall。Areclusebytemperamentandhabit,literallyspendingyearswithoutsettingherfootbeyondthedoorstep,andmanymoreyearsduringwhichherwalkswerestrictlylimitedtoherfather’sgrounds,shehabituallyconcealedhermind,likeherperson,fromallbutaveryfewfriends;anditwaswithgreatdifficultythatshewaspersuadedtoprint,duringherlifetime,threeorfourpoems。Yetshewroteversesingreatabundance;andthoughbroughtcuriouslyindifferenttoallconventionalrules,hadyetarigorousliterarystandardofherown,andoftenalteredawordmanytimestosuitanearwhichhaditsowntenaciousfastidiousness。
  MissDickinsonwasborninAmherst,Mass。,Dec。10,1830,anddiedthereMay15,1886。Herfather,Hon。EdwardDickinson,wastheleadinglawyerofAmherst,andwastreasurerofthewell-knowncollegetheresituated。Itwashiscustomonceayeartoholdalargereceptionathishouse,attendedbyallthefamiliesconnectedwiththeinstitutionandbytheleadingpeopleofthetown。OntheseoccasionshisdaughterEmilyemergedfromherwontedretirementanddidherpartasgracioushostess;norwouldanyonehaveknownfromhermanner,Ihavebeentold,thatthiswasnotadailyoccurrence。
  Theannualoccasiononcepast,shewithdrewagainintoherseclusion,andexceptforaveryfewfriendswasasinvisibletotheworldasifshehaddweltinanunnery。Formyself,althoughIhadcorrespondedwithherformanyyears,Isawherbuttwicefacetoface,andbroughtawaytheimpressionofsomethingasuniqueandremoteasUndineorMignonorThekla。
  Thisselectionfromherpoemsispublishedtomeetthedesireofherpersonalfriends,andespeciallyofhersurvivingsister。ItisbelievedthatthethoughtfulreaderwillfindinthesepagesaqualitymoresuggestiveofthepoetryofWilliamBlakethanofanythingtobeelsewherefound,——flashesofwhollyoriginalandprofoundinsightintonatureandlife;wordsandphrasesexhibitinganextraordinaryvividnessofdescriptiveandimaginativepower,yetoftensetinaseeminglywhimsicalorevenruggedframe。Theyareherepublishedastheywerewritten,withveryfewandsuperficialchanges;althoughitisfairtosaythatthetitleshavebeenassigned,almostinvariably,bytheeditors。Inmanycasestheseverseswillseemtothereaderlikepoetrytornupbytheroots,withrainanddewandearthstillclingingtothem,givingafreshnessandafragrancenototherwisetobeconveyed。Inothercases,asinthefewpoemsofshipwreckorofmentalconflict,wecanonlywonderatthegiftofvividimaginationbywhichthisreclusewomancandelineate,byafewtouches,theverycrisesofphysicalormentalstruggle。Andsometimesagainwecatchglimpsesofalyricstrain,sustainedperhapsbutforalineortwoatatime,andmakingthereaderregretitssuddencessation。Butthemainqualityofthesepoemsisthatofextraordinarygraspandinsight,utteredwithanunevenvigorsometimesexasperating,seeminglywayward,butreallyunsoughtandinevitable。Afterall,whenathoughttakesone’sbreathaway,alessonongrammarseemsanimpertinence。AsRuskinwroteinhisearlierandbetterdays,"Noweightnormassnorbeautyofexecutioncanoutweighonegrainorfragmentofthought。"
