  Nearlyeveryseatwasoccupied,andsmalladditionaltableshadbeenbroughtin,wherefloorspacepermitted,toaccommodatelatecomers,withtheresultthatmanyofthetableswerealmosttouchingeachother。Jertonwasbeckonedbyawaitertotheonlyvacanttablethatwasdiscernible,andtookhisseatwiththeuncomfortableandwhollygroundlessideathatnearlyeveryoneintheroomwasstaringathim。Hewasayoungishmanofordinaryappearance,quietofdressandunobtrusiveofmanner,andhecouldneverwhollyridhimselfoftheideathatafiercelightofpublicscrutinybeatonhimasthoughhehadbeenanotabilityorasuper-nut。Afterhehadorderedhislunchtherecametheunavoidableintervalofwaiting,withnothingtodobuttostareattheflower-
