  Itshotfromthegroundforaspace,straight,strong,andsuperb,andthenbustintoninesplendidbranches,eachatreeinitself,allgrowingsymmetricallyfromtheparenttrunk,andcastingagratefulshadowunderwhichalltheinhabitantsofthetinyvillagemighthavegathered。
  Itwasnotaloneitssize,itsbeauty,itssymmetry,itsdensityoffoliage,thatmadeitthegloryoftheneighborhood,butthelowgrownofitsbranchesandtheextra-ordinarybreadthofitsshade。
  Passers-byfromtheadjacenttownswerewonttohitchtheirteamsbythewayside,crawlthroughthestumpfenceandwalkacrossthefields,foranearerviewofitsmagnificence。
  Oneman,indeed,wasknowntodrivebythetreeeverydayduringthesummer,andlifthishattoit,respectfully,eachtimehepassed;
  buthewasapoetandhisintellectwasnotgreatlyesteemedinthevillage。
  Theelmwasalmostasbeautifulinoneseasonasinanother。
  Inthespringitrosefrommoistfieldsandmellowploughedground,itstinybrownleafbudsburstingwithprideatthethoughtofthelovelinesscoiledupinside。Insummeritstoodinthemidstofawavinggardenofbuttercupsandwhiteweed,atoweringmassofverdantleafage,ashelterfromthesunandarefugefromthestorm;acool,splendid,hospitabledome,underwhichthewearyfarmermightflinghimself,andgazeupwardasintotheheightsanddepthsofanemeraldheaven。
