  TheQueristcontainingseveralQueriesproposedtotheconsiderationofthePublicItheLordhavebroughtdownthehightree,haveexaltedthelowtree,havedriedupthegreentree,andhavemadethedrytreetoflourish。——Ezek。xvii,24。
  AdvertisementbytheAuthorTheQueristwasfirstpublishedintheyearonethousandsevenhundredandthirty—five;sincewhichtimethefaceofthingsissomewhatchanged。Inthiseditionsomealterationshavebeenmade。ThethreePartsarepublishedinone;somefewQueriesareadded,andmanyomitted,particularlyofthoserelatingtothesketchorplanofanationalbank,whichitmaybetimeenoughtotakeagaininhandwhenthepublicshallseemdisposedtomakeuseofsuchanexpedient。IhaddeterminedwithmyselfnevertoprefixmynametotheQuerist,butinthelasteditionwasoverruledbyafriend,whowasremarkableforpursuingthepublicinterestwithasmuchdiligenceasothersdotheirown。I
  apprehendthesamecensureonthisthatIincurreduponanotheroccasion,formeddlingoutofmyprofession;thoughtofeedthehungryandclothethenaked,bypromotinganhonestindustry,will,perhaps,bedeemednoimproperemploymentforaclergymanwhostillthingshimselfamemberofthecommonwealth。Asthesumofhumanhappinessissupposedtoconsistinthegoodsofmind,body,andfortune,Iwouldfainmakemystudiesofsomeusetomankindwithregardtoeachofthesethreeparticulars,andhopeitwillnotbethoughtfaultyorindecentinanyman,ofwhatprofessionsoever,toofferhismitetowardsimprovingthemanners,health,andprosperityofhisfellow—creatures。
