hadhimfloggedandsecuredinironsforfivedays。Ihavedetermineduponthestrictestdiscipline,inspiteoftheoldprejudice。
  AsthegreaterportionoftheEgyptianregimentiscomposedoffelons,convictedofoffencesinCairo,andtransportedtotheWhiteNile,mytaskisratherdifficultinestablishingareformation。Thegoodtasteoftheauthoritiesmightbequestionedforsupplyingmewitharegimentofconvictstocarryoutanenterprisewhereahighstateofdisciplineandgoodconductareessentialtosuccess。”

  yardsinlength,onthebankoftheriver,bywhichthewholefleetcouldlie,andembarkordisembarkcargo。Alargestablecontainedthetwentyhorses,whichbygreatcarehadkepttheircondition。Itwasabsolutelynecessarytokeeptheminadarkstableonaccountoftheflies,whichattackedallanimalsinswarms。Evenwithinthedarkenedbuildingitwasnecessarytolightfirescomposedofdriedhorse-dung,todriveawaythethesepersecutinginsects。Thehairfellcompletelyofftheearsandlegsofthedonkeyswhichwereallowedtorambleabout,owingtotheswarmsoffliesthatirritatedtheskin;butinspiteofthecomparativecomfortofastable,thedonkeyspreferredalifeofout-doorindependence,andfelloffinconditionifconfinedtoahouse。Theworstflieswerethesmallgreyspecies,withalongproboscis,similartothosethatareoftenseeninhousesinEngland。
