  Marchgentlynoddedherheadandasked,ratherabruptly,ifhewouldn’tliketohavesomethingtoeat。Josawandunderstoodthelook,andshestalkedgrimlyawaytogetwineandbeeftea,mutteringtoherselfassheslammedthedoor,“Ihateestimableyoungmenwithbrowneyes!“

  Twoeasychairsstoodsidebysideattheheadofthetable,inwhichsatBethandherfather,feastingmodestlyonchickenandalittlefruit。Theydrankhealths,toldstories,sangsongs,`reminisced’,astheoldfolkssay,andhadathoroughlygoodtime。
  Asleighridehadbeenplanned,butthegirlswouldnotleavetheirfather,sotheguestsdepartedearly,andastwilightgathered,thehappyfamilysattogetherroundthefire。
  “JustayearagoweweregroaningoverthedismalChristmasweexpectedtohave。Doyouremember?“askedJo,breakingashortpausewhichhadfollowedalongconversationaboutmanythings。
