  HetoldtheworthyMrsChivery,afterturningthesethingsoverinhismind——hedidthat,indeed,whileshewasyetspeaking——thathemightbereliedupontodohisutmostatalltimestopromotethehappinessofMissDorrit,andtofurtherthewishesofherheartifitwereinhispowertodoso,andifhecoulddiscoverwhattheywere。Atthesametimehecautionedheragainstassumptionsandappearances;enjoinedstrictsilenceandsecrecy,lestMissDorritshouldbemadeunhappy;andparticularlyadvisedhertoendeavourtowinherson’sconfidenceandsotomakequitesureofthestateofthecase。MrsChiveryconsideredthelatterprecautionsuperfluous,butsaidshewouldtry。Sheshookherheadasifshehadnotderivedallthecomfortshehadfondlyexpectedfromthisinterview,butthankedhimneverthelessforthetroublehehadkindlytaken。Theythenpartedgoodfriends,andArthurwalkedaway。

  Itwasatimelychance,favourabletohiswishofobservingherfaceandmannerwhennooneelsewasby。Hequickenedhispace;

  Theyturned,andClennamsaid,HerewasMaggycoming!LittleDorritlookedup,surprised,andtheyconfrontedMaggy,whobroughtherselfatsightofthemtoadeadstop。Shehadbeentrottingalong,sopreoccupiedandbusythatshehadnotrecognisedthemuntiltheyturneduponher。Shewasnowinamomentsoconscience-
  strickenthatherverybasketpartookofthechange。
  ’Maggy,youpromisedmetostopnearfather。’

  TheselettersClennamansweredwiththeaidofhispencilandpocket-book,onthespot;sendingthefatherwhatheaskedfor,andexcusinghimselffromcompliancewiththedemandoftheson。HethencommissionedMaggytoreturnwithhisreplies,andgavehertheshillingofwhichthefailureofhersupplementalenterprisewouldhavedisappointedherotherwise。
