  SuchwasthehourwhenClennamstoppedatthecorner,observingthegirlandthestrangemanastheywentdownthestreet。Theman’sfootstepsweresonoisyontheechoingstonesthathewasunwillingtoaddthesoundofhisown。Butwhentheyhadpassedtheturningandwereinthedarknessofthedarkcornerleadingtotheterrace,hemadeafterthemwithsuchindifferentappearanceofbeingacasualpassengeronhisway,ashecouldassume。
