  Ithadneveroccurredtoher,onthepresentoccasion,butasathingtobecarefullyavoided。Topreventitsbeingexpected,shehadfixedonthesmallesthabitationwhichcouldrankasgenteelamongthebuildingsofMansfieldparish,theWhiteHousebeingonlyjustlargeenoughtoreceiveherselfandherservants,andallowaspareroomforafriend,ofwhichshemadeaveryparticularpoint。
  ThespareroomsattheParsonagehadneverbeenwanted,buttheabsolutenecessityofaspareroomforafriendwasnowneverforgotten。Notallherprecautions,however,couldsaveherfrombeingsuspectedofsomethingbetter;
