  Hesmiledasheanswered,“Iamafraidtheavenuestandsabadchance,Fanny。“
  “IshouldliketoseeSothertonbeforeitiscutdown,toseetheplaceasitisnow,initsoldstate;butIdonotsupposeIshall。“
  “Haveyouneverbeenthere?No,younevercan;
  and,unluckily,itisoutofdistanceforaride。

  MissCrawfordlistenedwithsubmission,andsaidtoherself,“Heisawell-bredman;hemakesthebestofit。“
  “IdonotwishtoinfluenceMr。Rushworth,“hecontinued;
  “but,hadIaplacetonewfashion,Ishouldnotputmyselfintothehandsofanimprover。Iwouldratherhaveaninferiordegreeofbeauty,ofmyownchoice,andacquiredprogressively。Iwouldratherabidebymyownblundersthanbyhis。“

  EdmundwassorrytohearMissCrawford,whomhewasmuchdisposedtoadmire,speaksofreelyofheruncle。
  Itdidnotsuithissenseofpropriety,andhewassilenced,tillinducedbyfurthersmilesandlivelinesstoputthematterbyforthepresent。
  “Mr。Bertram,“saidshe,“Ihavetidingsofmyharpatlast。
