  MissWard,attheendofhalfadozenyears,foundherselfobligedtobeattachedtotheRev。Mr。Norris,afriendofherbrother-in-law,withscarcelyanyprivatefortune,andMissFrancesfaredyetworse。
  MissWard’smatch,indeed,whenitcametothepoint,wasnotcontemptible:SirThomasbeinghappilyabletogivehisfriendanincomeinthelivingofMansfield;

  ButMissFrancesmarried,inthecommonphrase,todisobligeherfamily,andbyfixingonalieutenantofmarines,withouteducation,fortune,orconnexions,diditverythoroughly。Shecouldhardlyhavemadeamoreuntowardchoice。SirThomasBertramhadinterest,which,fromprincipleaswellaspride——fromageneralwishofdoingright,andadesireofseeingallthatwereconnectedwithhiminsituationsofrespectability,hewouldhavebeengladtoexertfortheadvantageofLadyBertram’ssister;butherhusband’sprofessionwassuchasnointerestcouldreach;andbeforehehadtimetodeviseanyothermethodofassistingthem,anabsolutebreachbetweenthesistershadtakenplace。
