  AsitchancedGodfreydidseeIsobeloncemorebeforeheleftEngland。
  ItwasarrangedthathewastoleaveCharingCrossforSwitzerlandearlyonacertainWednesdaymorning。LateontheTuesdayafternoon,Mr。KnightbroughttheladtotheCharingCrossHotel。There,havingtakenhisticketandmadeallothernecessaryarrangements,helefthim,returninghimselftoEssexbytheeveningtrain。Theirfarewellwassomewhatdisconcerting,atanyratetothemindoftheyouth。
  Hisfatherretiredwithhimtohisroomatthetopofthehotel,andthereadministeredacarefullypreparedlecturewhichtoucheduponeverypointoftheearnestChristian’sduty,endingupwithadmonitionsonthedangersoftheworld,theflesh,andthedevil,andastrongcautionagainstfrivolous,unbelievingandevil-disposedpersons,especiallysuchaswereyoung,good-lookingandworepetticoats。

  HereGodfreyreflectedthattherewassomeonebehindwhotemptedthewoman,alsothatitisbettertoworkthantositinagardenineternalidleness,andlastly,thatadesireforknowledgeisnaturalandpraiseworthy。HadIsobelbeeninhisplaceshewouldhaveadvancedthesearguments,probablyinvigorousandpointedlanguage,but,havinglearntsomethingofAdam’slesson,hewaswiserandheldhistongue。

  Godfreyconsideredthematterandsaidwiththeverveofslightintoxication:

  TheendofitwasthatataboutaquartertoelevenhefoundhimselfsomewhereintheneighbourhoodoftheEdgwareRoad,utterlystrandedasitwere,sincehismindseemedincapableofappreciatingfurtherindicationsoflocality。
