  INoneofmystrollswithKory-Kory,inpassingalongtheborderofathickgrowthofbushes,myattentionwasarrestedbyasingularnoise。Onenteringthethicket,Iwitnessedforthefirsttimetheoperationoftattooingasperformedbytheseislanders。

  Altogether,thesightofthesestrangeinstrumentsrecalledtomindthatdisplayofcruel-lookingmother-of-pearl-handledthingswhichoneseesintheirvelvet-linedcasesattheelbowofadentist。

  Theideaofengraftinghistattooinguponmywhiteskinfilledhimwithallapainter’senthusiasm:againandagainhegazedintomycountenance,andeveryfreshglimpseseemedtoaddtothevehemenceofhisambition。Notknowingtowhatextremitieshemightproceed,andshudderingattheruinhemightinflictuponmyfigure-head,Inowendeavouredtodrawoffhisattentionfromit,andholdingoutmyarminafitofdesperation,signedtohimtocommenceoperations。Butherejectedthecompromiseindignantly,andstillcontinuedhisattackonmyface,asthoughnothingshortofthatwouldsatisfyhim。Whenhisforefingersweptacrossmyfeatures,inlayingoutthebordersofthoseparallelbandswhichweretoencirclemycountenance,thefleshfairlycrawleduponmybones。Atlast,halfwildwithterrorandindignation,Isucceededinbreakingawayfromthethreesavages,andfledtowardsoldMarheyo’shouse,pursuedbytheindomitableartist,whoranafterme,implementsinhand。Kory-Kory,however,atlastinterfered,anddrewhimofffromthechase。
