　　Inmyvariouswanderingsthroughthevale，andasIbecamebetteracquaintedwiththecharacterofitsinhabitants，Iwasmoreandmorestruckwiththelight-heartedjoyousnessthateverywhereprevailed。Themindsofthesesimplesavages，unoccupiedbymattersofgravermoment，werecapableofderivingtheutmostdelightfromcircumstanceswhichwouldhavepassedunnoticedinmoreintelligentcommunities。Alltheirenjoyment，indeed，seemedtobemadeupofthelittletriflingincidentsofthepassinghour；butthesediminutiveitemsswelledaltogethertoanamountofhappinessseldomexperiencedbymoreenlightenedindividuals，whosepleasuresaredrawnfrommoreelevatedbutrarersources。
　　Whatcommunity，forinstance，ofrefinedandintellectualmortalswouldderivetheleastsatisfactionfromshootingpop-guns？
　　Themeresuppositionofsuchathingbeingpossiblewouldexcitetheirindignation，andyetthewholepopulationofTypeedidlittleelsefortendaysbutoccupythemselveswiththatchildishamusement，fairlyscreaming，too，withthedelightitaffordedthem。
