  BythistimeevenlouderandmoreangryexclamationshadbeguntoascendfromGubin。Yettheonlysoundtoreachmyearswasthewoman’smutteredwhispering,andasIglancedintoherfaceIperceivedthatitshithertohigh-colouredandroundedcontourshadfallenin,andturnedgrey,andthatherflushedlipsweretremblingtosuchanextentasalmosttopreventthearticulationofherwords。Lastly,hereyeswerefrozenintoanexpressionofpitiful,dogliketerror。
  Suddenlysheshruggedhershoulders,straightenedherform,putawayfromhertheexpressionofterror,andsaidquietly,butincisively:

  “Haulaway,you!“shoutedGubin。
  Ihauledhimupinastateofcoldandwet;whereafterhefelltostampingaroundthecopingofthewell,cursing,andwavinghisarms。
