  supposeitsoundsarchaic,butIcannothelpthinkingthatthepeoplewithmotorboatsmissagreatdeal。Iftheywouldonlykeeptorowboatsorcanoes,anduseoarorpaddlethemselves,theywouldgetinfinitelymorebenefitthanbyhavingtheirworkdoneforthembygasoline。ButIrarelytookexercisemerelyasexercise。PrimarilyI

  Whenobligedtoliveincities,Iforalongtimefoundthatboxingandwrestlingenabledmetogetagooddealofexerciseincondensedandattractiveform。IwasreluctantlyobligedtoabandonbothasI

  SomeasgoodcitizensasIknowareorwereprize-fighters。TakeMikeDonovan,ofNewYork。HeandhisfamilyrepresentatypeofAmericancitizenshipofwhichwehavearighttobeproud。Mikeisadevotedtemperanceman,andcanberelieduponforeverymovementintheinterestofgoodcitizenship。IwasfirstintimatelythrownwithhimwhenIwasPoliceCommissioner。OneeveningheandI——bothindresssuits——attendedatemperancemeetingofCatholicsocieties。Itculminatedinalivelyset-tobetweenmyselfandaTammanySenatorwhowasaverygoodfellow,butwhoseideasoftemperancedifferedradicallyfrommine,and,astheeventproved,fromthoseofthemajorityofthemeeting。Mikeevidentlyregardedhimselfasmybacker——hewassittingontheplatformbesideme——andIthinkfeltaspleasedandinterestedasiftheset-tohadbeenphysicalinsteadofmerelyverbal。AfterwardIgrewtoknowhimwellbothwhileIwasGovernorandwhileIwasPresident,andmanyatimehecameonandboxedwithme。
