  ThenIrecollectedwhereIwas,andstruckthemanbetweentheeyes,partiallystunninghimHesteppeddownfromtheplatformatonce,and,cringingandfawningandweepingandattemptingtoembracemyfeet,ledmeroundtotheburrowwhichhehadindicated。
  “IknownothingwhateveraboutthegentlemanYourGodbemywitnessthatIdonotHewasasanxioustoescapeasyouwere,andhewasshotfromtheboat,thoughwealldidallthingstepreventhimfromattemptingHewasshothere。”GungaDasslaidhishandonhisleanstomachandbowedtotheearth。

  InmyfrenzyofdelightatthepossibilitiesofescapeIrecollectshakinghandseffusivelywithGungaDass,afterwehaddecidedthatweweretomakeanattempttogetawaythatverynightItwaswearyworkwaitingthroughouttheafternoon。
  Aboutteno’clock,asfarasIcouldjudge,whentheMoonhadjustrisenabovethelipofthecrater,GungaDassmadeamoveforhisburrowtobringoutthegun-barrelswherebytomeasureourpath。
