  Afeeling,forwhichIhavenoname,hastakenpossessionofmysoulasensationwhichwilladmitofnoanalysis,towhichthelessonsofbygonetimesareinadequate,andforwhichIfearfuturityitselfwilloffermenokey。Toamindconstitutedlikemyown,thelatterconsiderationisanevil。IshallneverIknowthatIshallneverbesatisfiedwithregardtothenatureofmyconceptions。Yetitisnotwonderfulthattheseconceptionsareindefinite,sincetheyhavetheirorigininsourcessoutterlynovel。Anewsenseanewentityisaddedtomysoul。

  andthecolossalwatersreartheirheadsaboveuslikedemonsofthedeep,butlikedemonsconfinedtosimplethreatsandforbiddentodestroy。Iamledtoattributethesefrequentescapestotheonlynaturalcausewhichcanaccountforsucheffect。Imustsupposetheshiptobewithintheinfluenceofsomestrongcurrent,orimpetuousunder-tow。

  TheshipandallinitareimbuedwiththespiritofEld。Thecrewglidetoandfroliketheghostsofburiedcenturies;theireyeshaveaneageranduneasymeaning;andwhentheirfingersfallathwartmypathinthewildglareofthebattle-lanterns,IfeelasIhaveneverfeltbefore,althoughIhavebeenallmylifeadealerinantiquities,andhaveimbibedtheshadowsoffallencolumnsatBalbec,andTadmor,andPersepolis,untilmyverysoulhasbecomearuin。
