ForGodaloneis,andwithouthimwearenot。Thisisnotthemereclangofatinklingmetaphysicalcymbal;hethatendeavourstoliveapartfromGodmustatlengthfind——notmerelythathehasbeenwalkinginavainshow,butthathehasbeenhimselfbutthephantomofadream。ButforthelifeofthelivingGod,makinghimbe,andkeepinghimbeing,hemustfadeevenoutofthelimboofvanities!
Hemoreandmoreseldomwentoutofthehouse,moreandmoreseldomlefthisapartment。Attimeshewouldreadagreatdeal,thenfordayswouldnotopenabook,butseemabsorbedinmeditation——ameditationwhichhadnothinginitworthyofthename。InhiscommunicationswithDonal,hedidnotseemintheleastawarethathehadmadehimtheholderofasecretbywhichhecouldfrustratehisplansforhisfamily。Theseplansheclungto,partlyfrompaternity,partlyfromcontemptforsociety,andpartlyinthefancyofrepairingthewronghehaddonehischildren'smother。Themorallydiseasedwillatoneforwrongbyfreshwrong——initsturntodemandlikereparation!Hewoulddoanythingnowtosecurehissonsinthepositionofwhichinlawhehaddeprivedthembythewronghehaddonethewomanwhomallhadbelievedhiswife。Throughthemarriageoftheeldestwiththeheiress,hewouldmakehimtheheadofthehouseinpowerasindignity,andthiswasnowalmosttheonlytiethatboundhimtotherealityofthings。HecaredlittleenoughaboutForgue,buthisconsciencewashauntedwithhiscrueltiestotheyouth'smother。ThesewereoftensuchasIdarenotputonrecord:theycamealloftheprideofself-loveandself-worship——asevildemonsaseverragedinthefiercestfireofMoloch。Inthemadnesswithwhichtheypossessedhim,hehadinflicteduponhernotonlysoresthumiliations,butbodilytortures:hewouldsee,hesaid,whatshewouldbearforhissake!

Fatigueatlengthbegantoinvadehim,andtherewiththesenseofhissituationgrewmorekeen:greatwearinessovercomesterror;thebeginningsofwearinessenhanceit。Everynowandthenhewouldstop,thinkingheheardthecryofachild,onlytorecognizeitasthenoiseofhisfile。Heresolvedatlasttostopforthenight,andafterteagotothetowntobuyanewandfitterfile。
