  PossiblythelatterwasnotmistakeninimaginingthathewasreceivedsimplyinordertoannoyTotski,whodislikedhimextremely。Ganiaalsowasoftenmadethebuttofthejester’ssarcasms,whousedthismethodofkeepinginNastasiaPhilipovna’sgoodgraces。

  Ganiasaidallthisperfectlyseriously,andwithouttheslightestappearanceofjoking;indeed,heseemedstrangelygloomy。

  Thisinvitationtodrink,couched,asitwas,insuchinformalterms,cameverystrangelyfromNastasiaPhilipovna。Herusualentertainmentswerenotquitelikethis;therewasmorestyleaboutthem。However,thewinewasnotrefused;eachguesttookaglassexceptingGania,whodranknothing。
  ItwasextremelydifficulttoaccountforNastasia’sstrangeconditionofmind,whichbecamemoreevidenteachmoment,andwhichnonecouldavoidnoticing。
