Alltheguestswereknowntotheprince;butthecuriouspartofthematterwasthattheyhadallarrivedonthesameevening,asthoughwithoneaccord,althoughhehadonlyhimselfrecollectedthefactthatitwashisbirthdayafewmomentssince。
"Youmusthavetoldsomebodyyouweregoingtotrotoutthechampagne,andthat’swhytheyareallcome!"mutteredRogojin,asthetwoenteredtheverandah。"Weknowallaboutthat!You’veonlytowhistleandtheycomeupinshoals!"hecontinued,almostangrily。Hewasdoubtlessthinkingofhisownlateexperienceswithhisbooncompanions。

Thepresenceofcertainofthoseintheroomsurprisedtheprincevastly,buttheguestwhoseadventfilledhimwiththegreatestwonder——almostamountingtoalarm——wasEvgeniePavlovitch。Theprincecouldnotbelievehiseyeswhenhebeheldthelatter,andcouldnothelpthinkingthatsomethingwaswrong。
Lebedeffranuppromptlytoexplainthearrivalofallthesegentlemen。Hewashimselfsomewhatintoxicated,buttheprincegatheredfromhislong-windedperiodsthatthepartyhadassembledquitenaturally,andaccidentally。
