  Clairmontbroughtusanexcellentdinner,andwelaughedincessantlyduringitsprogress,evenattheastonishmentoftheabbeandPossanowhentheycametothequayandfoundthefeluccahadflown。However,IwassureofmeetingthemagainatAntibes,andwereachedthatportatsixo’clockintheevening。
  Themotionoftheseahadtireduswithoutmakingusfeelsick,fortheairwasfresh,andourappetitesfeltthebenefitsofit,andinconsequencewedidgreathonourtothesupperandthewine。
  MarcolinewhosestomachwasweakenedbythesicknessshehadundergonesoonfelttheeffectsoftheBurgundy,hereyeswereheavy,andshewenttosleep。Myniecewouldhaveimitatedher,butI
  remindedhertenderlythatwewereatAntibes,andsaidIwassureshewouldkeepherword。Shedidnotanswerme,butgavemeherhand,loweringhereyeswithmuchmodesty。
  Intoxicatedwithhersubmissionwhichwassolikelove,Igotintobedbesideher,exclaiming,——

  Wespentanightthatmustbeimaginedratherthandescribed。Shetoldmeinthemorningthatshefeltallhadbeenforthebest,asifshehadgivenwayatfirstshecouldneverhavemadeuphermindtoaccepttheyoungGenoese,thoughheseemedlikelytomakeherhappy。
  Marcolinecametoseeusinthemorning,caressedus,andpromisedtosleepbyherselftherestofthevoyage。

  ImadeupmymindthatnothingofthisshouldpassintothehandsoftheGenoese,andtoldthemadwomanthatwemusttrustentirelyinParalisforthemethodofconsecration,whichmustbebegunbyourplacingeachpacketinasmallcasketmadeonpurpose。Onepacket,andoneonly,couldbeconsecratedinaday,anditwasnecessarytobeginwiththesun。ItwasnowFriday,andweshouldhavetowaittillSunday,thedayofthesun。OnSaturdayIhadaboxwithsevennichesmadeforthepurpose。
