  Thesmallkeyenclosedintheletterbelongedtoabureauintheboudoir。Anxioustoknowthenatureofthepresentthatshecouldoffermeattheinstanceofherfriend,Iopenedthebureau,andfoundaparcelcontainingaletterandamorocco—leathercase。

  AfterIhadtakencareofallthegoldshehadwon,Igavehermyarm,andweleftthe’ridotto’,butremarkingthatafewinquisitivepersonswerefollowingus,Itookagondolawhichlandedusaccordingtomyinstructions。OnecanalwaysescapepryingeyesinthiswayinVenice。
  AftersupperIcountedourwinnings,andIfoundmyselfinpossessionofonethousandsequinsasmyshare。Irolledtheremainderinpaper,andmyfriendaskedmetoputitinherbureau。Ithentookmylocketandthrewitoverherneck;itgaveherthegreatestdelight,andshetriedforalongtimetodiscoverthesecret。AtlastIshowedither,andshepronouncedmyportraitanexcellentlikeness。

  Adroitlysnatchinghiswandoutofhishand,IliftedhisColumbineonmyshoulders,andpursuedhim,strikinghimwiththewand,tothegreatdelightandmirthofthecompany。TheColumbinewasscreamingbecauseshewasafraidofmytumblingdownandofshewinghercentreofgravitytoeverybodyinthefall。Shehadgoodreasontofear,forsuddenlyafoolishMerryAndrewcamebehindme,trippedmeup,anddownItumbled。EverybodyhootedMasterPunch。Iquicklypickedmyselfup,andrathervexedIbeganaregularfightwiththeinsolentfellow。Hewasofmysize,butawkward,andhehadnothingbutstrength。Ithrewhim,andshakinghimvigorouslyonallsidesI
