Butnowtoseehowithappened,oneoftheprisoners,Incredulitybyname,intheinterimbetwixtthesentenceandthetimeofexecution,brakeprisonandmadehisescape,andgetshimawayquiteoutofthetownofMansoul,andlaylurkinginsuchplacesandholesashemight,untilheshouldagainhaveopportunitytodothetownofMansoulamischieffortheirthushandlingofhimastheydid。

toldmyLordofeight,andmyselfwastheninth,whoshouldassuredlyhavedrunkofthesamecup,butthatthroughcraft,I,asthouseest,havemademineescapefromthem。’
WhenDiabolushadheardthislamentablestory,heyelledandsnuffedupthewindlikeadragon,andmadetheskytolookdarkwithhisroaring;healsoswarethathewouldtrytoberevengedonMansoulforthis。Sothey,bothheandhisoldfriendIncredulity,concludedtoenterintogreatconsultation,howtheymightgetthetownofMansoulagain。
Now,beforethistime,thedaywascomeinwhichtheprisonersinMansoulweretobeexecuted。Sotheywerebroughttothecross,andthatbyMansoul,inmostsolemnmanner;forthePrincesaidthatthisshouldbedonebythehandofthetownofMansoul,’thatImaysee,’saidhe,’theforwardnessofmynowredeemedMansoultokeepmyword,andtodomycommandments;andthatImayblessMansoulindoingthisdeed。Proofofsinceritypleasesmewell;letMansoulthereforefirstlaytheirhandsupontheseDiabolonianstodestroythem。’
SothetownofMansoulslewthem,accordingtothewordoftheirPrince;butwhentheprisonerswerebroughttothecrosstodie,youcanhardlybelievewhattroublesomeworkMansoulhadofittoputtheDiabolonianstodeath;forthemen,knowingthattheymustdie,andeveryofthemhavingimplacableenmityintheirheartstoMansoul,whatdidtheybuttookcourageatthecross,andthereresistedthemenofthetownofMansoul?WhereforethemenofMansoulwereforcedtocryoutforhelptothecaptainsandmenofwar。
NowthegreatShaddaihadasecretaryinthetown,andhewasagreatloverofthemenofMansoul,andhewasattheplaceofexecutionalso;sohe,hearingthemenofMansoulcryoutagainstthestrugglingsandunrulinessoftheprisoners,roseupfromhisplace,andcameandputhishandsuponthehandsofthemenofMansoul。SotheycrucifiedtheDiaboloniansthathadbeenaplague,agrief,andanoffencetothetownofMansoul。

Emmanuelalsoatthistimeappointedthemadaywhereinhewouldrenewtheircharter,yea,whereinhewouldrenewandenlargeit,mendingseveralfaultstherein,thatMansoul’syokemightbeyetmoreeasy。Andthishedidwithoutanydesireoftheirs,evenofhisownfranknessandnoblemind。

Butwhatjoy,whatcomfort,whatconsolation,thinkyou,didnowpossesstheheartsofthemenofMansoul!Thebellsrung,theminstrelsplayed,thepeopledanced,thecaptainsshouted,thecolourswavedinthewind,andthesilvertrumpetssounded;andtheDiaboloniansnowweregladtohidetheirheads,fortheylookedlikethemthathadbeenlongdead。
Whenthiswasover,thePrincesentagainfortheeldersofthetownofMansoul,andcommunedwiththemaboutaministrythatheintendedtoestablishamongthem;suchaministrythatmightopenuntothem,andthatmightinstructtheminthethingsthatdidconcerntheirpresentandfuturestate。

Atthisnews,whentheeldersofMansoulbroughtittothepeople,thewholetowncamerunningtogether,(foritpleasedthemwell,aswhateverthePrincenowdidpleasedthepeople,)andallwithoneconsentimploredhisMajestythathewouldforthwithestablishsuchaministryamongthemasmightteachthembothlawandjudgment,statuteandcommandment;thattheymightbedocumentedinallgoodandwholesomethings。Sohetoldthemthathewouldgrantthemtheirrequests,andwouldestablishtwoamongthem;onethatwasofhisFather’scourt,andonethatwasanativeofMansoul。
’Hethatisfromthecourt,’saidhe,’isapersonofnolessqualityanddignitythanmyFatherandI;andheistheLordChiefSecretaryofmyFather’shouse:forheis,andalwayshasbeen,thechiefdictatorofallmyFather’slaws,apersonaltogetherwellskilledinallmysteries,andknowledgeofmysteries,asismyFather,orasmyselfis。
Indeedheisonewithusinnature,andalsoastolovingof,andbeingfaithfulto,andintheeternalconcernsofthetownofMansoul。

BythispersonyoumustframeallyourpetitionstomyFatherandme;andwithouthisadviceandcounselfirstobtained,letnothingenterintothetownorcastleofMansoul,forthatmaydisgustandgrievethisnobleperson。
’Takeheed,Isay,thatyoudonotgrievethisminister;forifyoudo,hemayfightagainstyou;andshouldheoncebemovedbyyoutosethimselfagainstyouinbattlearray,thatwilldistressyoumorethaniftwelvelegionsshouldfrommyFather’scourtbesenttomakewaruponyou。

’Behold,’saidthePrincetoMansoul,’myloveandcaretowardsyou;Ihaveaddedtoallthatispast,thismercy,toappointyoupreachers;themostnobleSecretarytoteachyouinallhighandsublimemysteries;andthisgentleman,’
pointingtoMr。Conscience,’istoteachyouinallthingshumananddomestic,forthereinliethhiswork。Heisnot,bywhatIhavesaid,debarredoftellingtoMansoulanythingthathehathheardandreceivedatthemouthofthelordhighSecretary;onlyheshallnotattempttopresumetopretendtobearevealerofthosehighmysterieshimself;forthebreakingofthemup,andthediscoveryofthemtoMansoulliethonlyinthepower,authority,andskillofthelordhighSecretaryhimself。Talkofthemhemay,andsomaytherestofthetownofMansoul;yea,andmay,asoccasiongivesthemopportunity,pressthemuponeachotherforthebenefitofthewhole。Thesethings,therefore,Iwouldhaveyouobserveanddo,foritisforyourlife,andthelengtheningofyourdays。
’AndonethingmoretomybelovedMr。Recorder,andtoallthetownofMansoul:Youmustnotdwellin,norstayupon,anythingofthatwhichhehathincommissiontoteachyou,astoyourtrustandexpectationofthenextworld;(ofthenextworld,Isay,forIpurposetogiveanothertoMansoul,whenthiswiththemiswornout;)butforthatyoumustwhollyandsolelyhaverecourseto,andmakestayuponhisdoctrinethatisyourTeacherafterthefirstorder。Yea,Mr。Recorderhimselfmustnotlookforlifefromthatwhichhehimselfrevealeth;hisdependenceforthatmustbefoundedinthedoctrineoftheotherpreacher。LetMr。Recorderalsotakeheedthathereceivenotanydoctrine,orpointofdoctrine,thatisnotcommunicatedtohimbyhisSuperiorTeacher,noryetwithintheprecinctsofhisownformalknowledge。’
Now,afterthePrincehadthussettledthingsinthefamoustownofMansoul,heproceededtogivetotheeldersofthecorporationanecessarycaution,towit,howtheyshouldcarryittothehighandnoblecaptainsthathehad,fromhisFather’scourt,sentorbroughtwithhim,tothefamoustownofMansoul。
’Thesecaptains,’saidhe,’dolovethetownofMansoul,andtheyarepickedmen,pickedoutofabundance,asmenthatbestsuit,andthatwillmostfaithfullyserveinthewarsofShaddaiagainsttheDiabolonians,forthepreservationofthetownofMansoul。’Ichargeyoutherefore,’saidhe,’OyeinhabitantsofthenowflourishingtownofMansoul,thatyoucarryitnotruggedlyoruntowardlytomycaptains,ortheirmen;since,asIsaid,theyarepickedandchoicemen—menchosenoutofmanyforthegoodofthetownofMansoul。I
say,Ichargeyou,thatyoucarryitnotuntowardlytothem:
forthoughtheyhavetheheartsandfacesoflions,whenatanytimetheyshallbecalledforthtoengageandfightwiththeKing’sfoes,andtheenemiesofthetownofMansoul;yetalittlediscountenancecastuponthemfromthetownofMansoulwilldejectandcastdowntheirfaces,willweakenandtakeawaytheircourage。Donot,therefore,Omybeloved,carryitunkindlytomyvaliantcaptainsandcourageousmenofwar,butlovethem,nourishthem,succourthem,andlaytheminyourbosoms;andtheywillnotonlyfightforyou,butcausetoflyfromyouallthosetheDiaboloniansthatseek,andwill,ifpossible,be,yourutterdestruction。
’If,therefore,anyofthemshouldatanytimebesickorweak,andsonotabletoperformthatofficeoflove,which,withalltheirhearts,theyarewillingtodo(andwilldoalsowhenwellandinhealth),slightthemnot,nordespisethem,butratherstrengthenthemandencouragethem,thoughweakandreadytodie,fortheyareyourfence,andyourguard,yourwall,yourgates,yourlocks,andyourbars。Andalthough,whentheyareweak,theycandobutlittle,butratherneedtobehelpedbyyou,thanthatyoushouldthenexpectgreatthingsfromthem,yet,whenwell,youknowwhatexploits,whatfeatsandwarlikeachievementstheyareabletodo,andwillperformforyou。
’Besides,iftheybeweak,thetownofMansoulcannotbestrong;iftheybestrong,thenMansoulcannotbeweak;yoursafety,therefore,dothlieintheirhealth,andinyourcountenancingthem。Remember,also,thatiftheybesick,theycatchthatdiseaseofthetownofMansoulitself。
’ThesethingsIhavesaiduntoyoubecauseIloveyourwelfareandyourhonour:observe,therefore,OmyMansoul,tobepunctualinallthingsthatIhavegiveninchargeuntoyou,andthatnotonlyasatowncorporate,andsotoyourofficersandguard,andguidesinchief,buttoyouasyouareapeoplewhosewell—being,assinglepersons,dependsontheobservationoftheordersandcommandmentsoftheirLord。
’Next,OmyMansoul,Idowarnyouofthat,ofwhich,notwithstandingthatreformationthatatpresentiswroughtamongyou,youhaveneedtobewarnedabout:whereforehearkendiligentlyuntome。Iamnowsure,andyouwillknowhereafter,thatthereareyetoftheDiaboloniansremaininginthetownofMansoul,Diaboloniansthataresturdyandimplacable,andthatdoalreadywhileIamwithyou,andthatwillyetmorewhenIamfromyou,study,plot,contrive,invent,andjointlyattempttobringyoutodesolation,andsotoastatefarworsethanthatoftheEgyptianbondage;
