  theyaretheavowedfriendsofDiabolus,thereforelookaboutyou。TheyusedheretoforetolodgewiththeirPrinceintheCastle,whenIncredulitywastheLordMayorofthistown;butsincemycominghither,theyliemoreintheoutsidesandwalls,andhavemadethemselvesdens,andcaves,andholes,andstrongholdstherein。Wherefore,OMansoul!thywork,astothis,willbesomuchthemoredifficultandhard;thatis,totake,mortify,andputthemtodeathaccordingtothewillofmyFather。Norcanyouutterlyridyourselvesofthem,unlessyoushouldpulldownthewallsofyourtown,thewhichIambynomeanswillingyoushould。Doyouaskme,Whatshallwedothen?Why,beyoudiligent,andquityoulikemen;observetheirholes;findouttheirhaunts;assaultthem,andmakenopeacewiththem。Wherevertheyhaunt,lurk,orabide,andwhattermsofpeacesoevertheyofferyou,abhor,andallshallbewellbetwixtyouandme。AndthatyoumaythebetterknowthemfromthosethatarethenativesofMansoul,Iwillgiveyouthisbriefscheduleofthenamesofthechiefofthem;andtheyarethesethatfollow:—TheLordFornication,theLordAdultery,theLordMurder,theLordAnger,theLordLasciviousness,theLordDeceit,theLordEvil—Eye,Mr。Drunkenness,Mr。Revelling,Mr。Idolatry,Mr。Witch—craft,Mr。Variance,Mr。Emulation,Mr。Wrath,Mr。Strife,Mr。Sedition,andMr。Heresy。Thesearesomeofthechief,OMansoul!ofthosethatwillseektooverthrowtheeforever。These,Isay,aretheskulkersinMansoul;butlookthouwellintothelawofthyKing,andtherethoushaltfindtheirphysiognomy,andsuchothercharacteristicalnotesofthem,bywhichtheycertainlymaybeknown。
  ’These,OmyMansoul,(andIwouldgladlythatyoushouldcertainlyknowit,)iftheybesufferedtorunandrangeaboutthetownastheywould,willquickly,likevipers,eatoutyourbowels;yea,poisonyourcaptains,cutthesinewsofyoursoldiers,breakthebarsandboltsofyourgates,andturnyournowmostflourishingMansoulintoabarrenanddesolatewilderness,andruinousheap。Wherefore,thatyoumaytakecouragetoyourselvestoapprehendthesevillainswhereveryoufindthem,Igivetoyou,myLordMayor,myLordWillbewill,andMr。Recorder,withalltheinhabitantsofthetownofMansoul,fullpowerandcommissiontoseekout,totake,andtocausetobeputtodeathbythecross,all,andallmannerofDiabolonians,whenandwhereveryoushallfindthemtolurkwithin,ortorangewithoutthewallsofthetownofMansoul。
  ’ItoldyoubeforethatIhadplacedastandingministryamongyou;notthatyouhavebutthesewithyou,formyfirstfourcaptainswhocameagainstthemasterandlordoftheDiaboloniansthatwasinMansoul,theycan,andifneedbe,andiftheyberequired,willnotonlyprivatelyinform,butpubliclypreachtothecorporationbothgoodandwholesomedoctrine,andsuchasshallleadyouintheway。Yea,theywillsetupaweekly,yea,ifneedbe,adailylectureinthee,OMansoul!andwillinstructtheeinsuchprofitablelessons,that,ifheeded,willdotheegoodattheend。Andtakegoodheedthatyousparenotthementhatyouhaveacommissiontotakeandcrucify。
  ’Now,asIhavesetbeforeyoureyesthevagrantsandrunagatesbyname,soIwilltellyou,thatamongyourselves,someofthemshallcreepintobeguileyou,evensuchaswouldseem,andthatinappearanceare,veryrifeandhotforreligion。Andthey,ifyouwatchnot,willdoyouamischief,suchanoneasatpresentyoucannotthinkof。
  ’These,asIsaid,willshowthemselvestoyouinanotherhuethanthoseunderdescriptionbefore。Wherefore,Mansoul,watchandbesober,andsuffernotthyselftobebetrayed。’
  WhenthePrincehadthusfarnewmodelledthetownofMansoul,andhadinstructedtheminsuchmattersaswereprofitableforthemtoknow,thenheappointedanotherdayinwhichheintended,whenthetownsfolkcametogether,tobestowafurtherbadgeofhonouruponthetownofMansoul,—
  abadgethatshoulddistinguishthemfromallthepeople,kindreds,andtonguesthatdwellinthekingdomofUniverse。
  Nowitwasnotlongbeforethedayappointedwascome,andthePrinceandhispeoplemetintheKing’spalace,wherefirstEmmanuelmadeashortspeechuntothem,andthendidforthemashehadsaid,anduntothemashehadpromised。
  ’MyMansoul,’saidhe,’thatwhichInowamabouttodo,istomakeyouknowntotheworldtobemine,andtodistinguishyoualsoinyourowneyes,fromallfalsetraitorsthatmaycreepinamongyou。’
  Thenhecommandedthatthosethatwaiteduponhimshouldgoandbringforthoutofhistreasurythosewhiteandglisteningrobes’thatI,’saidhe,’haveprovidedandlaidupinstoreformyMansoul。’Sothewhitegarmentswerefetchedoutofhistreasury,andlaidforthtotheeyesofthepeople。Moreover,itwasgrantedtothemthattheyshouldtakethemandputthemon,’according,’saidhe,’toyoursizeandstature。’Sothepeoplewereputintowhite,intofinelinen,whiteandclean。
  ThensaidthePrinceuntothem,’This,OMansoul,ismylivery,andthebadgebywhichmineareknownfromtheservantsofothers。Yea,itisthatwhichIgranttoallthataremine,andwithoutwhichnomanispermittedtoseemyface。Wearthem,therefore,formysake,whogavethemuntoyou;andalsoifyouwouldbeknownbytheworldtobemine。’
  Butnow!canyouthinkhowMansoulshone?Itwasfairasthesun,clearasthemoon,andterribleasanarmywithbanners。
  ThePrinceaddedfurther,andsaid,’Noprince,potentate,ormightyoneofUniverse,giveththisliverybutmyself:
  behold,therefore,asIsaidbefore,youshallbeknownbyittobemine。
  ’Andnow,’saidhe,’Ihavegivenyoumylivery,letmegiveyoualsoincommandmentconcerningthem;andbesurethatyoutakegoodheedtomywords。
  ’First。Wearthemdaily,daybyday,lestyoushouldatsometimesappeartoothersasifyouwerenoneofmine。
  ’Second。Keepthemalwayswhite;foriftheybesoiled,itisdishonourtome。
  ’Third。Whereforegirdthemupfromtheground,andletthemnotlagwithdustanddirt。
  ’Fourth。Takeheedthatyoulosethemnot,lestyouwalknaked,andtheyseeyourshame。
  ’Fifth。Butifyoushouldsullythem,ifyoushoulddefilethem,thewhichIamgreatlyunwillingyoushould,andtheprinceDiaboluswillbegladifyouwould,thenspeedyoutodothatwhichiswritteninmylaw,thatyetyoumaystand,andbefallbeforeme,andbeforemythrone。Also,thisisthewaytocausethatImaynotleaveyou,norforsakeyouwhilehere,butmaydwellinthistownofMansoulforever。’
  AndnowwasMansoul,andtheinhabitantsofit,asthesignetuponEmmanuel’srighthand。Wherewastherenowatown,acity,acorporation,thatcouldcomparewithMansoul!atownredeemedfromthehand,andfromthepowerofDiabolus!atownthattheKingShaddailoved,andthathesentEmmanueltoregainfromthePrinceoftheinfernalcave;yea,atownthatEmmanuellovedtodwellin,andthathechoseforhisroyalhabitation;atownthathefortifiedforhimself,andmadestrongbytheforceofhisarmy。WhatshallIsay,MansoulhasnowamostexcellentPrince,goldencaptainsandmenofwar,weaponsproved,andgarmentsaswhiteassnow。
  Norarethesebenefitstobecountedlittle,butgreat;canthetownofMansoulesteemthemso,andimprovethemtothatendandpurposeforwhichtheyarebestoweduponthem?
  WhenthePrincehadthuscompletedthemodellingofthetown,toshowthathehadgreatdelightintheworkofhishandsandtookpleasureinthegoodthathehadwroughtforthefamousandflourishingMansoul,hecommanded,andtheysethisstandarduponthebattlementsofthecastle。Andthen,First。Hegavethemfrequentvisits;notadaynowbuttheeldersofMansoulmustcometohim,orhetothem,intohispalace。Nowtheymustwalkandtalktogetherofallthegreatthingsthathehaddone,andyetfurtherpromisedtodo,forthetownofMansoul。ThuswouldheoftendowiththeLordMayor,myLordWillbewill,andthehonestsubordinatepreacherMr。Conscience,andMr。Recorder。Butoh,howgraciously,howlovingly,howcourteously,andtenderlydidthisblessedPrincenowcarryittowardsthetownofMansoul!
  Inallthestreets,gardens,orchards,andotherplaceswherehecame,tobesurethepoorshouldhavehisblessingandbenediction;yea,hewouldkissthem,andiftheywereillhewouldlayhandsonthem,andmakethemwell。Thecaptains,also,hewoulddaily,yea,sometimeshourly,encouragewithhispresenceandgoodlywords。Foryoumustknowthatasmilefromhimuponthemwouldputmorevigour,morelife,andstoutnessintothem,thanwouldanythingelseunderheaven。
  ThePrincewouldnowalsofeastthem,andbewiththemcontinually:hardlyaweekwouldpassbutabanquetmustbehadbetwixthimandthem。Youmayrememberthat,somepagesbefore,wemakementionofonefeastthattheyhadtogether;
  butnowtofeastthemwasathingmorecommon:everydaywithMansoulwasafeast—daynow。Nordidhe,whentheyreturnedtotheirplaces,sendthememptyaway,eithertheymusthavearing,agoldchain,abracelet,awhitestone,orsomething;sodearwasMansoultohimnow;solovelywasMansoulinhiseyes。
  Second。Whentheeldersandtownsmendidnotcometohim,hewouldsendinmuchplentyofprovisionuntothem;meatthatcamefromcourt,wineandbreadthatwerepreparedforhisFather’stable;yea,suchdelicateswouldhesenduntothem,andtherewithwouldsocovertheirtable,thatwhoeversawitconfessedthatthelikecouldnotbeseeninanykingdom。
  Third。IfMansouldidnotfrequentlyvisithimashedesiredtheyshould,hewouldwalkouttothem,knockattheirdoors,anddesireentrance,thatamitymightbemaintainedbetwixtthemandhim;iftheydidhearandopentohim,ascommonlytheywould,iftheywereathome,thenwouldherenewhisformerlove,andconfirmittoowithsomenewtokens,andsignsofcontinuedfavour。
  Andwasitnotnowamazingtobehold,thatinthatveryplacewheresometimesDiabolushadhisabode,andentertainedhisDiabolonianstothealmostutterdestructionofMansoul,thePrinceofprincesshouldsiteatinganddrinkingwiththem,whileallhismightycaptains,menofwar,trumpeters,withthesinging—menandsinging—womenofhisFather,stoodroundabouttowaituponthem!NowdidMansoul’scuprunover,nowdidherconduitsrunsweetwine,nowdidsheeatthefinestofthewheat,anddrinkmilkandhoneyoutoftherock!Now,shesaid,Howgreatishisgoodness!forsinceIfoundfavourinhiseyes,howhonourablehaveIbeen!
  TheblessedPrincedidalsoordainanewofficerinthetown,andagoodlypersonhewas;hisnamewasMr。God’s—Peace:
  thismanwassetovermyLordWillbewill,myLordMayor,Mr。
  Recorder,thesubordinatepreacher,Mr。Mind,andoverallthenativesofthetownofMansoul。Himselfwasnotanativeofit,butcamewiththePrinceEmmanuelfromthecourt。HewasagreatacquaintanceofCaptainCredenceandCaptainGood—Hope;somesaytheywerekin,andIamofthatopiniontoo。Thisman,asIsaid,wasmadegovernorofthetowningeneral,especiallyoverthecastle,andCaptainCredencewastohelphimthere。AndImadegreatobservationofit,thatsolongasallthingswentinMansoulasthissweet—naturedgentlemanwould,thetownwasinmosthappycondition。Nowtherewerenojars,nochiding,nointerferings,nounfaithfuldoingsinallthetownofMansoul;everymaninMansoulkeptclosetohisownemployment。Thegentry,theofficers,thesoldiers,andallinplaceobservedtheirorder。Andasforthewomenandchildrenofthetown,theyfollowedtheirbusinessjoyfully;theywouldworkandsing,workandsing,frommorningtillnight:sothatquitethroughthetownofMansoulnownothingwastobefoundbutharmony,quietness,joy,andhealth。Andthislastedallthatsummer。
  ButtherewasamaninthetownofMansoul,andhisnamewasMr。Carnal—Security;thismandid,afterallthismercybestowedonthiscorporation,bringthetownofMansoulintogreatandgrievousslaveryandbondage。Abriefaccountofhimandofhisdoingstakeasfolloweth:—
  WhenDiabolusatfirsttookpossessionofthetownofMansoul,hebroughtthither,withhimself,agreatnumberofDiabolonians,menofhisownconditions。NowamongthesetherewasonewhosenamewasMr。Self—Conceit,andanotablebriskmanhewas,asanythatinthosedaysdidpossessthetownofMansoul。Diabolus,then,perceivingthismantobeactiveandbold,senthimuponmanydesperatedesigns,thewhichhemanagedbetter,andmoretothepleasingofhislord,thanmostthatcamewithhimfromthedenscoulddo。
  Wherefore,findinghimsofitforhispurpose,hepreferredhim,andmadehimnexttothegreatLordWillbewill,ofwhomwehavewrittensomuchbefore。NowtheLordWillbewillbeinginthosedaysverywellpleasedwithhim,andwithhisachievements,gavehimhisdaughter,theLadyFear—Nothing,towife。Now,ofmyLadyFear—nothing,didthisMr。Self—
  Conceitbegetthisgentleman,Mr。Carnal—Security。
  Wherefore,therebeingtheninMansoulthosestrangekindsofmixtures,itwashardforthem,insomecases,tofindoutwhowerenatives,whonot,forMr。Carnal—SecuritysprangfrommyLordWillbewillbymother’sside,thoughhehadforhisfatheraDiabolonianbynature。
  Well,thisCarnal—Securitytookmuchafterhisfatherandmother;hewasself—conceited,hefearednothing,hewasalsoaverybusyman:nothingofnews,nothingofdoctrine,nothingofalteration,ortalkofalteration,couldatanytimebeonfootinMansoul,butbesureMr。Carnal—Securitywouldbeattheheadortailofit:but,tobesure,hewoulddeclinethosethathedeemedtheweakest,andstoodalwayswiththeminhiswayofstanding,thathesupposedwasthestrongestside。
  Now,whenShaddaithemighty,andEmmanuelhisSon,madewaruponMansoul,totakeit,thisMr。Carnal—Securitywasthenintown,andwasagreatdoeramongthepeople,encouragingthemintheirrebellion,puttingthemuponhardeningthemselvesintheirresistingtheKing’sforces:butwhenhesawthatthetownofMansoulwastaken,andconvertedtotheuseofthegloriousPrinceEmmanuel;andwhenhealsosawwhatwasbecomeofDiabolus,andhowhewasunroosted,andmadetoquitthecastleinthegreatestcontemptandscorn;
  andthatthetownofMansoulwaswelllinedwithcaptains,enginesofwar,andmen,andalsoprovision;whatdothhebutslylywheelaboutalso;andashehadservedDiabolusagainstthegoodPrince,sohefeignedthathewouldservethePrinceagainsthisfoes。
  AndhavinggotsomelittlesmatteringofEmmanuel’sthingsbytheend,beingbold,heventureshimselfintothecompanyofthetownsmen,anyattemptsalsotochatamongthem。NowheknewthatthepowerandstrengthofthetownofMansoulwasgreat,andthatitcouldnotbutbepleasingtothepeople,ifhecrieduptheirmightandtheirglory。WhereforehebeginnethhistalewiththepowerandstrengthofMansoul,andaffirmedthatitwasimpregnable;nowmagnifyingtheircaptainsandtheirslings,andtheirrams;thencryinguptheirfortificationsandstrongholds;and,lastly,theassurancesthattheyhadfromtheirPrince,thatMansoulshouldbehappyforever。Butwhenhesawthatsomeofthemenofthetownweretickledandtakenwithhisdiscourse,hemakesithisbusiness,andwalkingfromstreettostreet,housetohouse,andmantoman,heatlastbroughtMansoultodanceafterhispipe,andtogrowalmostascarnallysecureashimself;sofromtalkingtheywenttofeasting,andfromfeastingtosporting;andsotosomeothermatters。NowEmmanuelwasyetinthetownofMansoul,andhewiselyobservedtheirdoings。MyLordMayor,myLordWillbewill,andMr。RecorderwerealsoalltakenwiththewordsofthistattlingDiaboloniangentleman,forgettingthattheirPrincehadgiventhemwarningbeforetotakeheedthattheywerenotbeguiledwithanyDiaboloniansleight;hehadfurthertoldthemthatthesecurityofthenowflourishingtownofMansouldidnotsomuchlieinherpresentfortificationsandforce,asinhersousingofwhatshehad,asmightobligeherEmmanueltoabidewithinhercastle。FortherightdoctrineofEmmanuelwas,thatthetownofMansoulshouldtakeheedthattheyforgotnothisFather’sloveandhis;also,thattheyshouldsodemeanthemselvesastocontinuetokeepthemselvestherein。Nowthiswasnotthewaytodoit,namely,tofallinlovewithoneoftheDiabolonians,andwithsuchanonetooasMr。Carnal—Securitywas,andtobeledupanddownbythenosebyhim;theyshouldhaveheardtheirPrince,fearedtheirPrince,lovedtheirPrince,andhavestonedthisnaughtypacktodeath,andtookcaretohavewalkedinthewaysoftheirPrince’sprescribing:forthenshouldtheirpeacehavebeenasariver,whentheirrighteousnesshadbeenlikethewavesofthesea。

  Carnal—SecuritytheheartsofthemenofMansoulwerechilledandabatedintheirpracticallovetohim,First。Hebemoansthem,and,condolestheirstatewiththeSecretary,saying,’Ohthatmypeoplehadhearkeneduntome,andthatMansoulhadwalkedinmyways!Iwouldhavefedthemwiththefinestofthewheat;andwithhoneyoutoftherockwouldIhavesustainedthem。’Thisdone,hesaidinhisheart,’Iwillreturntothecourt,andgotomyplace,tillMansoulshallconsiderandacknowledgetheiroffence。’Andhedidso,andthecauseandmannerofhisgoingawayfromthemwas,thatMansouldeclinedhim,asismanifestintheseparticulars。

  ’3。Thelove—feaststhathadwonttobebetweentheirPrinceandthem,thoughhemadethemstill,andcalledthemtothem,yettheyneglectedtocometothem,ortobedelightedwiththem。
  ’4。Theywaitednotforhiscounsels,butbegantobeheadstrongandconfidentinthemselves,concludingthatnowtheywerestrongandinvincible,andthatMansoulwassecure,andbeyondallreachofthefoe,andthatherstatemustneedsbeunalterableforever。’
  Now,aswassaid,EmmanuelperceivingthatbythecraftofMr。Carnal—Security,thetownofMansoulwastakenofffromtheirdependenceuponhim,anduponhisFatherbyhim,andsetuponwhatbythemwasbestoweduponit;hefirst,asI
  said,bemoanedtheirstate,thenheusedmeanstomakethemunderstandthatthewaythattheywentoninwasdangerous:

  Now,themethodsofhiswithdrawing,asIwassayingbefore,werethus:—
  ’1。EvenwhilehewasyetwiththeminMansoul,hekepthimselfclose,andmoreretiredthanformerly。

  ’4。Norwhentheycametovisithim,asnowandthentheywould,wouldhebesoeasilyspokenwithastheyfoundhimtobeintimespast。Theymightnowknockonce,yea,twice,buthewouldseemnotatalltoregardthem;whereasformerlyatthesoundoftheirfeethewouldupandrun,andmeetthemhalfway,andtakethemtoo,andlaytheminhisbosom。’
  ButthusEmmanuelcarrieditnow,andbythishiscarriagehesoughttomakethembethinkthemselves,andreturntohim。
  But,alas!theydidnotconsider,theydidnotknowhisways,theyregardednot,theywerenottouchedwiththese,norwiththetrueremembranceofformerfavours。Whereforewhatdoeshebutinprivatemannerwithdrawhimself,firstfromhispalace,thentothegateofthetown,andsoawayfromMansoulhegoes,tilltheyshouldacknowledgetheiroffence,andmoreearnestlyseekhisface。Mr。God’s—Peacealsolaiddownhiscommission,andwouldforthepresentactnolongerinthetownofMansoul。
  Thustheywalkedcontrarytohim,andheagain,bywayofretaliation,walkedcontrarytothem。But,alas!bythistimetheyweresohardenedintheirway,andhadsodrunkinthedoctrineofMr。Carnal—Security,thatthedepartingoftheirPrincetouchedthemnot,norwasherememberedbythemwhengone;andso,ofconsequence,hisabsencenotcondoledbythem。
  Now,therewasadaywhereinthisoldgentleman,Mr。Carnal—
  Security,didagainmakeafeastforthetownofMansoul;andtherewasatthattimeinthetownoneMr。Godly—Fear,onenowbutlittlesetby,thoughformerlyoneofgreatrequest。
  Thisman,oldCarnal—Security,hadamind,ifpossible,togull,anddebauch,andabuse,ashedidtherest,andthereforehenowbidshimtothefeastwithhisneighbours。
  Sothedaybeingcome,theyprepare,andhegoesandappearswiththerestoftheguests;andbeingallsetatthetable,theydideatanddrink,andweremerry,evenallbutthisoneman:forMr。Godly—Fearsatlikeastranger,anddidneithereatnorwasmerry。Thewhich,whenMr。Carnal—Securityperceived,hepresentlyaddressedhimselfinaspeechthustohim:—
